UN Secretary-General Attends COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan
The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, recently traveled to Baku, Azerbaijan to participate in the twenty-ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, also known as COP29. During his visit, Guterres engaged in a series of meetings and events aimed at addressing the urgent need for climate action and mobilizing global leaders to take decisive steps to combat climate change.
Addressing World Leaders at COP29
On Tuesday, November 12, Secretary-General Guterres delivered a powerful speech during the opening ceremony of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit of COP29. He emphasized the critical importance of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C and highlighted the urgency of the situation. Guterres stated that time is running out and that the world must act swiftly to avoid irreversible damage caused by climate change. Additionally, he met with the Crown Prince of Jordan, Hussein bin Abdullah, and the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón.
Advocating for Climate Justice
Secretary-General Guterres actively advocated for climate justice during his visit to Baku. He spoke at the High-Level Dialogue on Loss and Damage, highlighting the creation of the Loss and Damage Fund as a victory for developing countries and justice. However, he emphasized that the initial capitalization of $700 million falls short of addressing the harm inflicted on vulnerable communities. Guterres called for increased financial support and urged the Multilateral Development Banks to enhance their lending capacity to effectively respond to the climate crisis.
