UN Chief Urges Action on Caribbean Crises

United Nations Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres arrived in Bridgetown, Barbados, on February 19 to participate in the forty-eighth Regular Meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government. During his visit, he engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Mia Mottley, focusing on critical regional issues, including the ongoing crisis in Haiti and the urgent need for climate action. Guterres emphasized the necessity for international collaboration to address these pressing challenges.

Meeting with Prime Minister Mottley

Upon his arrival, Guterres held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who is hosting the CARICOM conference. Their discussions centered on significant regional and global concerns, particularly the deteriorating situation in Haiti and the impacts of climate change. Guterres praised Barbados for its leadership in advocating for reforms to the international financial system through the Bridgetown Initiative 3.0, which aims to create a more equitable financial landscape for developing nations.

During the meeting, Guterres underscored the importance of unity in addressing the multifaceted crises facing the Caribbean. He noted that the region is experiencing a relentless series of challenges, leaving its people with little respite. The Secretary-General expressed his commitment to reporting to the UN Security Council on the situation in Haiti, where gangs have caused significant suffering among the population. He indicated that he would propose measures for the UN to help restore stability and security in the country.

Opening Ceremony Highlights

Later in the day, Guterres delivered remarks at the opening ceremony of the CARICOM conference. He acknowledged the Caribbean’s renowned beauty but warned of the “trouble in paradise” due to ongoing crises. He articulated the need for international solutions to foster a better present and a brighter future for the region. Guterres identified three critical areas for progress: peace and security, climate action, and sustainable development.

He reiterated the urgency of addressing the situation in Haiti, where violence and instability have reached alarming levels. Guterres called for collective action to tackle the climate crisis and promote sustainable development, emphasizing that these issues are interconnected and require a unified response from the international community.

Engagement with CARICOM Leaders

The following morning, Guterres participated in a closed session with CARICOM Heads of Government. This meeting provided a platform for leaders to discuss pressing regional issues, including finance, climate change, and security, with a particular focus on Haiti. Guterres also met with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, expressing gratitude for Jamaica’s role as Co-Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Stimulus Leaders Group.

During their conversation, they exchanged insights on international developments and the necessity of enhancing support for the Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti. They also addressed climate-related challenges and the need for increased financing for development initiatives. Before concluding his visit, Guterres held meetings with key figures, including Laurent Saint-Cyr, the Presidential Adviser of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council, and Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

Guterres departed Barbados on the evening of February 20, having engaged in vital discussions aimed at fostering collaboration and addressing the urgent needs of the Caribbean region.
