Twice as Nice: Chinese Adventurer Rescued from Mount Fuji Not Once, But Twice in a Week!

In a remarkable series of events, a Chinese national found himself needing rescue not once, but twice from the slopes of Mount Fuji within a single week. The 27-year-old, who was studying in Japan, initially climbed the iconic peak during the off-season. His adventure took a turn when he fell ill, suspected of altitude sickness, prompting rescue efforts.

First Rescue: A Climb Gone Wrong

The climber’s first rescue occurred while he was on the Fujinomiya trail, approximately 3,000 meters above sea level. After falling ill, he was airlifted to safety by local authorities. Just four days later, he made the decision to return to the mountain to retrieve his belongings, including his phone.

Second Rescue: A Quest for a Phone

Rescue officials were called back into action when the same man was spotted again on the mountain. It remains unclear whether he successfully retrieved his phone, but the authorities quickly recognized him as the individual they had rescued just days prior. This time, he was brought down on a stretcher and handed over to the fire department.

Risks of Off-Season Climbing

Mount Fuji, often blanketed in snow for most of the year, poses significant risks for climbers during the off-season. Authorities typically discourage hiking during this time due to the potential for severe weather conditions and altitude sickness. Despite these warnings, the allure of the mountain continues to draw adventurers.

New Regulations for Hikers

In light of the increasing number of climbers, local authorities recently implemented new regulations. Hikers on any of Mount Fuji’s four main trails will now face an entry fee of approximately 4,000 yen (around Rs 2,333). This move aims to manage the crowds and protect the environment on the majestic slopes of Japan’s tallest peak.
