Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996) was an American rapper and actor. He was one of the most influential musical artists of the 20th century and among the best-selling music artists worldwide, having sold more than 75 million records.
Early Life and Education
Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in East Harlem, Manhattan, to Afeni Shakur and Billy Garland, both active members of the Black Panther Party. His birth name was listed as Parish Lesane Crooks, but he was later renamed Tupac Amaru Shakur in honor of Túpac Amaru II, an indigenous revolutionary executed in Peru in 1781. His mother explained she wanted him to know he was “part of a world culture and not just from a neighborhood.”
In 1984, when Shakur was 13, his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Roland Park Middle School for eighth grade, then Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, before transferring to the Baltimore School for the Arts in tenth grade. There he studied acting, poetry, jazz, and ballet, performing in Shakespeare plays and The Nutcracker. At the school, he befriended actress Jada Pinkett and won rap competitions alongside beatboxer Dana “Mouse” Smith.
Career and Achievements
Shakur relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988 and launched his rap career. His debut album 2Pacalypse Now (1991) established him as a central figure in West Coast hip-hop, marked by politically conscious lyrics addressing social injustice and the marginalization of African Americans. He followed this with Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z… (1993) and Me Against the World (1995), both achieving critical and commercial success.
His 1996 album All Eyez on Me became a watershed moment—the first hip-hop double album to achieve Diamond certification. The record shifted toward volatile gangsta rap and produced two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, “California Love” and “How Do U Want It.” Shakur formed the group Thug Life and collaborated with major artists including Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and the Outlawz.
Beyond music, Shakur pursued acting, starring in Juice (1992), Poetic Justice (1993), Above the Rim (1994), Bullet (1996), Gridlock’d (1997), and Gang Related (1997).
Notable Events and Milestones
In November 1994, Shakur was shot five times in the lobby of a New York recording studio. He faced legal troubles and served eight months in prison on sexual abuse charges before being released pending appeal in 1995. Following his release, he signed to Marion “Suge” Knight’s Death Row Records and became central to the East Coast–West Coast hip-hop rivalry, including a high-profile feud with the Notorious B.I.G.
On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot in a drive-by shooting in Paradise, Nevada, and died six days later on September 13. The shooter was never conclusively identified, though on August 31, 2026, South Side Compton Crips member Duane “Keffe D” Davis was convicted of orchestrating the murder.
Awards and Honors
Shakur’s posthumous album Greatest Hits (1998) achieved Diamond certification, one of only nine hip-hop albums to do so. Five additional albums released after his death have been certified multi-platinum in the United States, including The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (1996) under his stage name Makaveli. In 2002, he was inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. In 2017, Shakur was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Rolling Stone ranked him among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and in 2023, he received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
