TRAI Revokes Advertisement Duration Regulations for TV Channels

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced significant changes to advertisement regulations for television channels. On September 10, 2026, TRAI issued new regulations that repeal the existing Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) Regulations, 2012. This move eliminates the previous ceiling of twelve minutes of advertisements per hour in television programming.

The initial regulations, introduced in 2012, were designed to protect viewers from excessive advertising by allowing a maximum of twelve minutes of ads in a single hour of broadcasting. They also empowered TRAI to issue directives to service providers to ensure compliance and safeguard subscriber interests. This measure was largely aimed at promoting quality service in line with the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994.

However, a recent notification from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) on August 21, 2026, omitted a specific clause—sub-rule (11) of rule 7—from the Cable Television Networks Rules, thereby lifting the advertisement duration restriction for television channels. This decision reflects the changing landscape of the broadcasting sector, characterized by enhanced competition and diverse consumer preferences. By removing this cap, the government aims to foster fair competition and facilitate business operations within the television broadcasting industry.

With the central government’s decision to abolish the advertisement ceiling, TRAI found it necessary to adjust its regulations accordingly. Maintaining the previous standards would create inconsistencies with the updated Cable Television Networks Rules. Consequently, TRAI has officially repealed the 2012 regulations and all supplementary orders and directions as of the notification date.

These regulatory changes are pivotal as they reflect ongoing evolutions in the media landscape, responding to both market dynamics and viewer choices. Stakeholders in the television industry, including broadcasters and advertisers, now have the flexibility to manage advertisement strategies without the constraints previously imposed. As the sector adapts, both viewers and industry players will be watching closely to see how these changes unfold.
