TRAI Publishes Report on Operator Assisted Drive Tests Conducted at 22 Locations
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently completed extensive drive tests across multiple cities and regions, assessing the performance of major telecom service providers. The tests, conducted in collaboration with companies like Bharti Airtel, BSNL/MTNL, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea, aimed to evaluate voice and data services in various locations. The findings will provide insights into the quality of telecom services available to consumers in these areas.
Drive Test Locations and Objectives
TRAI’s drive tests were conducted in several cities, including Vijayapura, Chandrapur, Bhopal, and New Delhi, among others. The tests took place in the quarter ending December 2024 and covered both urban and rural areas, as well as highways. The primary goal was to measure the performance of telecom networks in real-world conditions, focusing on various technologies such as 2G, 3G, and 4G. The results will help identify areas where service providers excel and where improvements are needed, ultimately enhancing user experience.
Key Performance Indicators Assessed
During the drive tests, TRAI evaluated several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for both voice and data services. For voice services, the assessment included metrics such as coverage, call setup success rate, drop call rate, block call rate, handover success rate, and received quality (RX quality). These indicators are crucial for understanding the reliability and quality of voice communications.
For data services, TRAI measured download and upload throughputs, web browsing delay, video streaming delay, and latency. These metrics are essential for evaluating the performance of internet services provided by telecom operators. By analyzing these KPIs, TRAI aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of telecom services in the tested regions.
Details of the Drive Tests Conducted
The drive tests were meticulously planned, with specific routes and areas designated for each test. For instance, in Bengaluru, tests were conducted in Vijayapura city and surrounding areas from October 14 to October 16, 2024, covering a distance of 450 kilometers. Similarly, tests in Bhopal took place from November 21 to November 23, 2024, covering 415 kilometers.
Other notable tests included assessments in Warangal, where the drive tests spanned from December 16 to December 19, 2024, covering 480 kilometers. Each test was designed to provide a snapshot of the telecom services available in those areas, contributing to a broader understanding of service quality across the country.
Accessing the Reports and Further Information
TRAI has made the detailed reports from these drive tests available on its official website, www.trai.gov.in. For individuals seeking clarification or additional information, TRAI has provided contact details for Shri Tejpal Singh, Advisor (QoS-I), who can be reached via email or telephone. This transparency ensures that consumers and stakeholders can access the findings and understand the performance of telecom services in their regions.
