Tommy Seymour: Scotland’s Prolific Wing

Tommy Seymour (1 July 1988 – ) is a Scottish former professional rugby union player. He earned 55 international caps for Scotland between 2013 and 2019, finishing as the country’s fourth-top try scorer with 20 tries.

Early Life and Education

Seymour was born in Nashville to a Scottish mother and English father. He spent his first nine years in the United States before his family relocated overseas, first to Dubai for eighteen months and then to Tyrella, Northern Ireland. He attended Down High School. His parents settled permanently in Tyrella.

Career and Achievements

Seymour qualified to play for Scotland through his Glasgow-born mother. He represented Ulster before joining Glasgow Warriors in the Pro14, where he became a consistent performer. He was selected for the Pro12 Dream Teams at the end of the 2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons. In the 2017-18 season, he was drafted to Marr RFC in the Scottish Premiership, followed by a move to Currie for the 2018-19 season. He announced his retirement from all professional rugby in April 2021.

Notable Events and Milestones

Seymour made his international debut when named in the full Scottish national team on 24 October 2012 for the end-of-year rugby union tests. In November 2014, he scored two tries from interceptions against Argentina and New Zealand, then added another try against Tonga. His performances earned him selection for the 2017 British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in June and July. Though he did not appear in any test matches, he featured in four tour games and scored three tries—one against the Highlanders and two against the Hurricanes—making him the leading try scorer on the tour. He played in two Rugby World Cups during his international career. Seymour announced his retirement from international rugby in December 2019.

Awards and Honors

Seymour was named to the Pro12 Dream Teams twice, following the 2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons. He was selected for the British & Irish Lions squad in April 2017.
