This commemoration serves as a remembrance and a warning for the future

On June 25, 2025, the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Emergency by hosting the Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas event at Delhi’s Thyagaraj Stadium. The gathering featured prominent figures, including Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who emphasized the importance of remembering this significant chapter in India’s history. The event aimed to educate the youth about the past to ensure that such violations of democracy are never repeated.
Significance of the Commemoration
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, serving as the Chief Guest, underscored the importance of remembering historical events that have shaped the nation. He stated, โWhile bad incidents are generally forgotten over time, those related to national and social life must be remembered perpetually to cultivate a responsible, organized, and vigilant youth ready to defend our democracy.โ Shah noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s initiative to observe June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ reflects a commitment to keeping the memory of the Emergency alive. This annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in safeguarding democratic values.
Reflections on the Emergency
During his address, Amit Shah reflected on the dark period of the Emergency, which lasted from 1975 to 1977. He described it as a time when the country was effectively imprisoned, with the voices of its citizens silenced, courts rendered powerless, and writers subjected to censorship. Shah emphasized that remembering these events is crucial, stating, โThis commemoration serves as both a remembrance and a warning to future generations.โ His remarks highlighted the necessity of acknowledging the past to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Emphasizing Democratic Values
Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also spoke at the event, stressing the critical importance of democracy. He recalled that June 25, 1975, marked a significant setback in India’s democratic journey, as the Emergency led to the suspension of fundamental rights for citizens. Shekhawat urged the audience, particularly the youth, to recognize the importance of this day. He asserted that commemorating the Emergency is essential to ensure that violations of constitutional rights and democratic principles are never repeated.
Launch of ‘The Emergency Diaries’
A notable highlight of the event was the release of the book ‘The Emergency Diaries โ Years that Forged a Leader’ by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This book compiles Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s experiences during the anti-Emergency movement, providing insights into a pivotal time in Indian history. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Vinai Kumar Saxena, and Chief Minister of Delhi Rekha Gupta, among others. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to remembering and learning from the past to strengthen India’s democratic fabric.
