United Nations Officials Urge Unified Action to End Yemen

The ongoing conflict in Yemen has created a humanitarian crisis of staggering proportions. Despite the escalating tensions and continued fighting, there remains a glimmer of hope for a political solution. Hans Grundberg, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, recently addressed the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the need for unity and decisive action among its members. He highlighted the fragile situation in Yemen, where violence persists in various regions, including Al-Dhale’e, Hudaydah, and Taโ€™iz. Grundberg urged all parties involved to engage actively in the peace process, which aims to establish a ceasefire, implement economic measures, and prepare for an inclusive political dialogue.

The Urgency of a Political Solution

The situation in Yemen is dire. Grundberg pointed out that the ongoing conflict has led to severe insecurity, not only within Yemen but also in the Red Sea region. The actions of the Houthis, including attacks on Israel, have drawn responses from the United States and the United Kingdom, further complicating the situation. Grundberg stressed that a peaceful resolution is achievable but requires a unified commitment from the Security Council. He stated, โ€œOnly through a shared commitment and decisive action can we create and maintain an environment conducive to effective mediation.โ€ The Yemeni people have long yearned for a sustainable and just peace, and it is crucial that the international community supports efforts to realize this goal.

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is worsening. Tom Fletcher, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, reported that the number of people in need has surged from 18.2 million to 19.5 million since the beginning of the year. The ongoing violence has endangered vital infrastructure, disrupted the flow of essential goods, and led to a liquidity crisis. Families are increasingly resorting to desperate measures for survival, including child marriage. The continued detention of humanitarian workers by the Houthi authorities further complicates relief efforts. Fletcher urged the Security Council to ensure respect for international humanitarian law and to provide the necessary funding to support humanitarian operations.

The Humanitarian Crisis: A Call for Action

The humanitarian situation in Yemen is alarming. The ongoing conflict has displaced over half a million people and exacerbated health crises, including cholera outbreaks. The UN estimates that 19.5 million people require assistance, a number that continues to grow. Fletcher emphasized the need for urgent humanitarian funding, estimating that $2.5 billion is necessary to reach 10.5 million people in need. He called for the Councilโ€™s sustained influence to ensure that critical infrastructure is protected and that humanitarian operations can proceed without hindrance.

The plight of women and children in Yemen is particularly concerning. Delegates from various countries have highlighted the need to lift restrictions that limit womenโ€™s freedom of movement and access to healthcare and education. Children, who make up more than half of those in need, are disproportionately affected by the ongoing violence. The international community must prioritize the protection of these vulnerable populations and ensure that their rights are upheld under international law.

The Role of the International Community

The international community plays a crucial role in resolving the crisis in Yemen. During the Security Council meeting, representatives from various countries echoed the call for an urgent political settlement. The representative from Ecuador emphasized the importance of preserving the commitments made by the warring parties to the peace roadmap. Meanwhile, the Russian Federationโ€™s representative called for intensified UN mediation efforts and an inclusive dialogue with all political forces. However, tensions remain, as the United States pointed out Russia’s alleged discussions with the Houthis regarding weapons transfers.

Chinaโ€™s delegate expressed concern about the impact of regional conflicts on Yemen, warning that the country may face new shocks due to the ongoing situation in Syria. The Republic of Korea and other nations urged the Houthis to cease their provocations and release detained humanitarian workers. The representatives of the United Kingdom and Japan also joined the call for the immediate release of detainees and the end of disinformation campaigns against humanitarian actors.
