The Ministry of Heavy Industries Launches Automotive Mission Plan 2047

The Indian government is taking significant steps to shape the future of its automotive industry with the launch of the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047). Spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and guided by Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy, this strategic initiative aims to position India as a global leader in the automotive sector by 2047. The plan focuses on fostering innovation, enhancing global competitiveness, and promoting sustainable development, building on the successes of previous automotive mission plans.
Inaugural Meeting Sets the Stage
The first meeting of the AMP 2047 Sub-Committees recently took place, marking a crucial step in outlining the plan’s objectives and framework. Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, emphasized the importance of this initiative. He stated that the vision for 2047 is not merely aspirational but a strategic roadmap with specific targets for growth, exports, and industry advancement. The focus is on enhancing India’s global standing in the automotive trade through innovation and quality, rather than concentrating on individual technologies or companies.
This inaugural meeting brought together representatives from various ministries, including Power, Road Transport and Highways, Commerce, and Petroleum and Natural Gas, alongside industry bodies such as SIAM, ACMA, CII, and FICCI. Academic institutions and research think tanks also participated, marking the beginning of an industry-led effort to shape the future of India’s automotive landscape.
Collaborative Approach to Address Challenges
AMP 2047 aims to unify the visions of various stakeholders, including Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), auto component manufacturers, policymakers, and academia. The plan seeks to tackle challenges such as technological advancements and the development of charging infrastructure. To facilitate this, seven Sub-Committees have been formed, comprising experts from government, industry, and academia. These committees will play a vital role in developing a comprehensive plan with specific milestones set for 2030, 2037, and 2047.
The collaborative approach is designed to ensure that all voices are heard and that the plan reflects the collective needs and aspirations of the automotive sector. By integrating insights from diverse stakeholders, AMP 2047 aims to create a robust framework that addresses current challenges while paving the way for future advancements.
Commitment to a Sustainable Automotive Ecosystem
Under the leadership of Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the Ministry of Heavy Industries is committed to fostering a self-reliant, innovative, and sustainable automotive ecosystem. The ministry plans to hold multiple Sub-Committee meetings to gather ideas and data, which will then be presented to the Apex Committee, chaired by Secretary Kamran Rizvi. This structured approach aims to consolidate the contributions of all stakeholders involved in the initiative.
The Ministry has expressed gratitude to all participants for their engagement and looks forward to their continued contributions. The overarching goal is to realize the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047, ensuring that India not only meets its domestic automotive needs but also emerges as a significant player in the global automotive market.
