The iPhone Air Revolutionizes Battery Performance

The new iPhone Air has garnered attention not just for its sleek design but also for the innovative battery technology it houses. Gene Berdichevsky, co-founder and CEO of battery materials company Sila, has praised the device’s battery as a remarkable advancement in energy storage. He highlights the unique two-dimensional shape of the battery, which is made possible by a patented metal can design that enhances durability and efficiency. This breakthrough could pave the way for future devices, including smaller gadgets like AR and VR glasses.

Revolutionary Battery Design

According to Berdichevsky, the battery in the iPhone Air represents a significant leap in technology. He noted that the two-dimensional shape of the battery is not only visually striking but also functional. During a recent trip to Asia, he observed the new battery cells and described them as revolutionary. Berdichevsky’s expertise in battery technology stems from his experience as Tesla’s seventh employee, where he played a crucial role in developing the original Roadster’s battery. Now, as the head of Sila, he is focused on creating silicon anode materials for consumer electronics and electric vehicles.

The iPhone Air’s battery utilizes a metal can design, which is a departure from the traditional pouch cells commonly found in consumer electronics. This metal casing provides added strength and durability, allowing for a more compact design. Berdichevsky explained that while most lithium-ion batteries tend to swell, the metal can construction makes the battery more resilient, enabling manufacturers to create batteries in various shapes without compromising safety.

Maximizing Space Efficiency

The metal can battery design allows Apple to optimize the limited space within the iPhone Air. Berdichevsky emphasized that this innovation enables the battery to fit snugly into available spaces after the circuit boards are placed. This efficient use of space is crucial for modern smartphones, which require powerful batteries without increasing overall size. The ability to design batteries in unconventional shapes could lead to further advancements in smartphone technology.

Berdichevsky believes that the advantages of metal can batteries will lead to widespread adoption across the smartphone industry, despite their higher manufacturing costs. The increased energy storage capacity they offer is expected to outweigh the initial investment. This technology could also play a vital role in the development of smaller devices, such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) glasses, which require compact and efficient power sources.

Future of Battery Technology

The transition to metal can batteries may also facilitate the eventual shift to silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Silicon anodes have the potential to store approximately 50% more energy than traditional graphite anodes, but they are prone to swelling. Berdichevsky noted that while companies like Sila have developed methods to manage this swelling, it remains a challenge at the cell level.

He explained that the introduction of metal can construction could help integrate silicon anodes into devices like the iPhone Air. This advancement would allow manufacturers to push performance limits further while managing the inherent challenges of silicon. Berdichevsky described this development as “pretty revolutionary,” indicating that it could significantly enhance the energy density and efficiency of future electronic devices.

In summary, the iPhone Air’s innovative battery technology, characterized by its metal can design, represents a significant step forward in energy storage solutions. As manufacturers explore these advancements, the potential for improved performance in smartphones and other devices continues to grow.
