Abdul Hamid (1 July 1933 – 10 September 1965), was an Indian soldier. He was posthumously given India’s highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra.
Life and Career
Abdul Hamid was born on July 1, 1933, in the village of Dhamupur in the Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. His family had a modest background, and Abdul grew up in a rural setting. Despite facing financial challenges, he was determined to receive an education and attended the local schools in his village.
In 1954, Abdul Hamid joined the Indian Army, enlisting in the 4th Battalion of The Grenadiers regiment. Over the years, he displayed exceptional skills and dedication to his duties, earning the respect of his peers and superiors. His commitment to the military service led to steady promotions.
Abdul Hamid’s defining moment came during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. He was deployed in the Khem Karan sector, where intense battles were taking place. On September 8, 1965, during the Battle of Asal Uttar, Abdul Hamid, serving as a Company Quarter Master Havildar, displayed extraordinary courage and strategic acumen.
Abdul Hamid’s actions during the battle were instrumental in turning the tide of the war. He destroyed a total of eight Pakistani tanks using his recoilless gun and held his ground despite being outnumbered. His unwavering bravery and determination inspired his fellow soldiers. For his exceptional gallantry, Abdul Hamid was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration, on January 10, 1966.
He passed away on 6 September 2005, in Pune.
