The Directorate General of Training (DGT) and Shell India Launch Joint Initiative

The Directorate General of Training (DGT), part of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), has partnered with Shell India to launch a new training program focused on Green Skills and Electric Vehicles (EV). This initiative aims to prepare students and faculty for careers in green energy and e-mobility. The program, set to begin on June 12, 2025, will be implemented by the Edunet Foundation across select Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in various states, including Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

Comprehensive Training Structure

The DGT and Shell India collaboration will deliver green skill training through a structured multi-tier model. The first phase of the program includes a 240-hour advanced EV Technician course at four NSTIs, a 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 ITIs equipped with Shell-supported labs, and a 50-hour foundational green skills module at additional ITIs without physical labs. The curriculum, developed jointly by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, encompasses essential topics such as EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols. Additionally, the initiative will provide Training of Trainers (ToT) for over 250 instructors, ensuring that they are well-equipped to teach the new curriculum. Participants will receive co-branded certifications from Shell and DGT, along with structured placement support to enhance their readiness for the job market.

Specialized EV Skill Labs

A significant feature of this initiative is the establishment of specialized EV skill labs within select ITIs and NSTIs. These labs are designed to provide hands-on training and expert-led sessions that align with industry standards. The program goes beyond theoretical learning by offering practical experience in a controlled environment. Successful participants will benefit from placement support and co-branded certifications, which will significantly enhance their employability in the growing green energy and EV sectors. This hands-on approach is crucial as it prepares students for real-world challenges and equips them with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market.

Government Support and Policy Alignment

The Government of India is actively promoting the adoption of Green Energy and Electric Vehicles as part of its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions. Initiatives like the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme have been instrumental in accelerating the uptake of EVs, improving infrastructure, and providing targeted incentives. In addition to national efforts, several states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, have introduced their own EV policies to facilitate the transition to electric mobility. These developments highlight the increasing demand for a skilled workforce in the green energy and EV sectors, making this training program timely and relevant.

Statements from Key Officials

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for MSDE, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it reflects the government’s commitment to aligning skilling with sustainability. He noted that green energy and electric mobility represent a significant opportunity for India to lead through innovation and talent. Smt. Trishaljit Sethi, Director General of DGT, highlighted that this partnership with Shell India aims to integrate cutting-edge training infrastructure and industry-relevant curriculum into vocational training. Mansi Madan Tripathy, Chairperson of Shell Group of Companies in India, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting local communities by equipping youth with essential skills for a lower-carbon future. This collaboration is poised to prepare India’s youth for successful careers in the green economy, enhancing their employability and positioning them as leaders in a sustainable future.
