Prime Minister Modi’s Visit to Thailand
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trip to Thailand underscored the deep-rooted connections between the two countries. While visiting the renowned Wat Pho Temple, famous for its reclining Buddha, he presented a replica of the Ashokan Lion Capitol, a symbol of India’s rich heritage. This gesture was not only a tribute to Thailand’s cultural significance but also a reaffirmation of the shared Buddhist values that unite both nations. In a significant announcement, PM Modi revealed that the Holy Relics of Devni Mori, discovered in Gujarat in 1960, would be sent to Thailand for an exposition. This initiative is expected to foster greater appreciation and understanding of Buddhism and its historical significance in both countries.
Thai Monk Delegation’s Visit to India
In a follow-up to PM Modi’s visit, a distinguished delegation of Thai monks, led by H.E. Somdet Phra Therayanamuni, the acting Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, arrived in India for a six-day visit. This delegation, which includes other prominent members of the Thai Buddhist Sangha, has been granted Guest of the State status. Their itinerary includes meetings with Indian ministers and visits to significant cultural sites, including Gujarat. The monks began their visit with a prayer ceremony at the National Museum, where they paid homage at the Relics shrine, accompanied by chanting in Pali. The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) hosted this significant event, further emphasizing the collaborative spirit between the two nations.
Cultural Connections and Shared Heritage
During their visit, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, met with the Thai delegation to discuss the profound cultural ties between India and Thailand. He highlighted that the relationship extends beyond Buddhism, encompassing shared traditions in Hinduism as well. The minister noted the historical exchanges of scholars between the two countries, referencing the influence of the Ramayana in Thai folklore and the linguistic connections through Sanskrit and Pali. He encouraged increased visits from Buddhist monks and laypeople to India, as well as opportunities for Indians to explore Thailand’s rich Buddhist heritage.
Significance of the Delegation’s Visit
The delegation’s visit holds significant cultural importance, as it reinforces the historical and spiritual bonds between India and Thailand. The Minister of Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that last year, the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha were sent from India to Thailand, allowing millions of devotees to pay their respects. This exchange reflects the deep faith and commitment of the Thai people towards Buddhism. The minister also extended an invitation to H.E. Somdet Phra Therayanamuni to visit Ayodhya, recognizing his interest in Hindu mythology. The visit of the Thai monks not only strengthens diplomatic ties but also promotes mutual understanding and respect for each other’s cultural heritage.
