Tess Harper: From Arkansas Teacher to Oscar Nominee
Tess Harper (born 15 August 1950) is an American actress. She earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her early film roles and became widely recognized for her recurring television work on Breaking Bad.
Early Life and Education
Harper was born Tessie Jean Washam in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, where she grew up as the daughter of Rosemary and Ed Washam, who operated Washam’s Hardware. She had a brother and sister. After graduating from Mammoth Spring High School, she attended Arkansas State University-Beebe, where she earned an associate degree in Fine Arts. She then transferred to Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) in Springfield, Missouri, and graduated with a degree in education. She taught ninth-grade English in Springfield before pursuing acting.
Career and Achievements
Harper began her acting career in theater productions, theme parks including Dogpatch, USA and Silver Dollar City, dinner theater, and children’s theater. She moved to Texas to appear in television commercials. A casting director for Tender Mercies saw one of her TV spots while staying overnight in Dallas and arranged an audition with director Bruce Beresford. Beresford was impressed and cast her as Rosa Lee, the young widow and mother who marries country singer Mac Sledge in what would become her feature film debut.
Tender Mercies (1983) brought Harper immediate recognition and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. That same year, she appeared in Amityville 3-D and the TV mini-series Chiefs, followed by roles in Flashpoint (1984) and the TV mini-series Celebrity (1984). She also appeared in Silkwood (1983) and Reckless Disregard (1985). In 1986, she reunited with director Bruce Beresford for Crimes of the Heart, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Chick Boyle.
Harper continued working in film throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, appearing in Ishtar (1987), Far North (1988), The Man in the Moon (1991), The Jackal (1997), and Loggerheads (2005). She also appeared in Michael Jackson’s 1991 music video “Black or White,” playing the mother. On television, she had a regular role on the CBS series Christy from 1994 to 1995, playing mountain woman Fairlight Spencer, and a recurring role on Early Edition from 1996 to 2000 as the mother of lead character Gary Hobsen. In 2007, she appeared in No Country for Old Men, playing the wife of Tommy Lee Jones’s character, and shared a Screen Actors Guild Award in the Best Ensemble Cast category with her fellow cast members.
Harper became widely known to contemporary audiences through her recurring role as Mrs. Pinkman, Jesse Pinkman’s mother, on Breaking Bad during its first three seasons (2008–2010). She reprised the role in the 2019 Netflix film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.
Notable Events and Milestones
Harper’s breakthrough came unexpectedly when a Tender Mercies casting director spotted her television commercial while in Dallas. Director Beresford recalled that Harper “walked into the room and even before she spoke, I thought, ‘That’s the girl to play the lead.'” Harper herself was uncertain about her casting, later recalling that after her final screen test she went to see Breaker Morant and cried uncontrollably, convinced the filmmakers would not give her the part.
Her 1986 Academy Award nomination for Crimes of the Heart marked a significant milestone, coming just three years into her film career. The role of Mrs. Pinkman on Breaking Bad introduced her to a new generation of viewers and became one of her most recognizable performances, spanning the show’s first three seasons and continuing into its film sequel.
Awards and Honors
Harper received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Tender Mercies (1983) and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Crimes of the Heart (1986).
