Telecom Sector Initiatives Announced

The BharatNet project is making significant strides in enhancing broadband connectivity across India, with over 214,000 Gram Panchayats now service-ready. In tandem, the rollout of 5G services is gaining momentum, supported by recent spectrum auctions that have allocated essential frequency bands to telecom providers. Additionally, the Postal Department is embracing digital transformation, introducing various initiatives aimed at modernizing its services and promoting e-commerce in both rural and urban areas. These developments were highlighted by Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, during a recent Lok Sabha session.

BharatNet Project Progress

The BharatNet project is a crucial initiative aimed at providing broadband connectivity to all Gram Panchayats (GPs) in India. As of now, 214,325 GPs have been made service-ready, marking a significant achievement in the government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide in rural areas. This project is being implemented in phases, ensuring that even the most remote villages gain access to high-speed internet. The initiative is expected to enhance educational opportunities, improve access to government services, and stimulate local economies by enabling better communication and information sharing.

5G Spectrum Auctions

To facilitate the rollout of 5G services, the government has conducted spectrum auctions in 2022 and 2024, assigning access to various frequency bands, including 700 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz. Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) that successfully bid for these frequencies are now authorized to deploy any International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) technology, including the advanced 5G network. This strategic move is anticipated to revolutionize telecommunications in India, providing faster internet speeds and improved connectivity for consumers and businesses alike.

Innovations in Postal Services

The Postal Department is actively pursuing digital initiatives to modernize its services. Key developments include the digitization of Post Office Savings Bank services and the transition of Postal Life Insurance to a fully online system. Furthermore, the establishment of Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras aims to enhance e-commerce capabilities in rural and urban areas. By collaborating with various e-commerce entities, the Postal Department is working to promote banking, insurance, and e-commerce services, thereby improving access to essential services for rural populations.

Support for Domestic Manufacturing

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is also focused on fostering innovation and domestic manufacturing within the communications sector. Through the ‘Digital Communications Innovation Square (DCIS)’ scheme, the DoT has supported 126 projects led by start-ups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with a total budget of โ‚น108 crore. Additionally, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, launched in February 2021, aims to boost domestic manufacturing of telecom and networking products with an outlay of โ‚น12,195 crore. As of May 31, 2025, PLI beneficiary companies have collectively invested โ‚น4,305 crores, generating sales of โ‚น85,391 crores, including exports worth โ‚น16,414 crores, and creating employment for over 28,000 individuals.
