TDK Prepares Batteries for Slim AI Integration in iPhones

TDK Corporation is set to revolutionize smartphone technology with the upcoming launch of its third generation of silicon-anode batteries. These advanced batteries are designed to enhance the performance of smartphones, particularly as major clients like Apple prepare to unveil slimmer models. TDK’s Chief Executive Officer, Noboru Saito, announced that shipments will commence by the end of June, ahead of the initial schedule, potentially allowing smartphone manufacturers to integrate these innovative batteries into their new devices sooner than expected.
Advancements in Battery Technology
TDK’s latest lithium-ion batteries utilize silicon for their anodes, a significant upgrade from the traditional graphite used in most batteries. This innovation enables TDK’s batteries to store 15 percent more energy in the same physical space, making them ideal for the latest smartphone designs. Saito expressed confidence in the technology, stating that some manufacturers might be able to incorporate these new batteries into their products a generation earlier than planned. This advancement is crucial as smartphone makers strive to create thinner devices without compromising battery life.
Impact on Major Smartphone Manufacturers
The introduction of TDK’s silicon-anode batteries comes at a pivotal time for leading smartphone manufacturers. Samsung recently launched its Galaxy S25 Edge, measuring just 5.9 millimeters in thickness, which is 30 percent slimmer than its predecessor, the S25 Ultra. This model also boasts enhanced camera features and AI capabilities. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing to release the iPhone 17 Air, which promises a new industrial design that may pave the way for even thinner models in the future. Both companies are significant clients for TDK, each accounting for approximately 10 percent of the company’s revenue.
Future Production Plans and Market Outlook
Looking ahead, TDK plans to introduce a fourth generation of silicon batteries in the next fiscal year, aiming to strengthen its market position further. Saito noted that mass production of these batteries requires specialized knowledge, emphasizing the complexity of the manufacturing process. Despite a projected one percent growth in global smartphone production to 12 billion units this year, TDK has expressed concerns about potential impacts from U.S. trade policies, prompting the company to present its annual outlook as a range rather than a fixed figure.
Diversifying Production Locations
In response to evolving market conditions, TDK is diversifying its production locations. While its battery subsidiary, Amperex Technology Ltd., has primarily operated in China, the company is establishing a new factory in India, expected to begin operations by September. Although initial production capacity will be limited, Saito indicated that producing silicon batteries on existing graphite battery production lines is feasible. This move aligns with a broader trend among manufacturers, including Apple and Nintendo, who are expanding their production capabilities outside of China. The allocation of production between China and India will depend on customer demands, ensuring TDK remains responsive to market needs.
