TDB Supports Indigenous Development of Multi-Spectral Camouflage Systems
The Technology Development Board (TDB) of India’s Department of Science and Technology has announced financial support for Meta Tattva Systems Pvt. Ltd. to establish an Industrial Meta Tattva Facility in New Delhi. This facility will focus on producing Multi-Spectral Camouflage (MSC) materials and shelters intended for strategic defense applications. The project aims to enhance the concealment of vital defense assets, such as tanks and aircraft, from detection across various spectrums, thereby providing a significant advantage in military operations.
Project Overview and Objectives
The primary goal of the initiative is to commercialize the Metamaterial Surface Cloaking System (MSCS), a groundbreaking technology designed to mask critical defense assets from detection by visual, ultraviolet (UV), and infrared (IR) sensors. By significantly reducing the visibility of these assets, the MSCS offers a transformative advantage in battlefield concealment. The technology is based on a patented design developed by IIT Kanpur and will be processed entirely in-house at the new facility, which is supported by the TDB.
The MSCS features a unique sandwiched structural design that provides high tensile and shear strength, while also being water and fire-resistant. This lightweight and rapidly deployable material is particularly suitable for applications such as Rapid Erect Sun Shelters (RESS), which are essential for quick field deployment in various military scenarios. The project not only aims to enhance operational capabilities but also to ensure that these advanced materials are produced domestically.
Innovative Features and Market Readiness
Meta Tattva’s camouflage solution stands out due to its tailor-made MSCS suite, which offers asset-specific masking that complies with stringent MIL PRF standards. The system has undergone rigorous field testing and has been validated by various defense entities, including the Indian Air Force Headquarters. Successful trials have led to the approval of the product for operational use, indicating a strong market readiness for this innovative technology.
Given the sensitive nature of multi-spectral camouflage technologies, importing such solutions can be challenging. Meta Tattva’s initiative addresses this gap by providing an indigenous alternative that meets the necessary specifications for counter-surveillance technologies. The company has also established a Sales & Marketing Agreement with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), facilitating seamless access to the defense supply chain and enhancing the market presence of its products.

The signing ceremony for the project was attended by senior officials from the TDB, scientists, and decorated veterans from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, underscoring the strategic significance of the initiative. The promoter of Meta Tattva, an Air Vice Marshal (Retd.), brings extensive operational experience and a deep understanding of defense requirements, further enhancing the project’s credibility.
Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of the TDB, emphasized the importance of effective concealment of critical assets in enhancing India’s strategic strength.
