TDB Partners with APChemi to Tackle Plastic Waste

The Technology Development Board (TDB) has entered into a significant partnership with APChemi Pvt. Ltd., based in Navi Mumbai, to advance the production and commercialization of purified pyrolysis oil. This initiative aims to facilitate the creation of circular plastics and sustainable chemicals, reflecting TDB’s commitment to promoting indigenous technological solutions for environmental sustainability. The agreement includes financial support from TDB, underscoring the urgency of addressing the global plastic waste crisis.
Innovative Technology for Plastic Waste Management
APChemi Pvt. Ltd. is at the forefront of plastic and biomass pyrolysis technology, holding 12 patents, including five that have been granted. The company has developed a groundbreaking method that transforms non-recyclable, end-of-life plastic waste into high-value, refinery-grade pyrolysis oil. Their patented PUREMAXโข technology is a cost-effective solution for purifying pyrolysis oil, making it suitable for producing PUROILโข, a feedstock recognized by major global petrochemical and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies for the manufacture of food-grade circular plastics.
As the global plastic waste crisis worsensโwith less than 10% of the 350 million metric tonnes produced annually being effectively recycledโthis project is set to enhance plastic circularity by processing between 1.2 to 6 kilotonnes of waste each year. Furthermore, it is projected to create around 100 jobs, significantly reducing plastic pollution and lowering carbon emissions associated with traditional waste disposal methods such as incineration and landfilling.
Addressing Complex Waste Challenges
A standout feature of APChemi’s technology is its ability to handle complex multi-layer packaging waste, which often includes materials like PET and PVC. The technology boasts an impressive impurity removal efficiency of up to 99.7% for chlorine, making it a viable solution for challenging waste streams. This innovative approach has attracted interest from eight global corporations, including industry giants like Shell, BASF, Unilever, and PepsiCo, all of whom have expressed intentions to incorporate PUROILโข into their supply chains to enhance circularity in plastics.
Support from TDB and Industry Leaders
Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, emphasized the project’s alignment with national priorities, stating that APChemiโs innovative solutions exemplify the type of indigenous technologies that TDB is committed to supporting. He noted that this initiative not only addresses critical environmental issues but also strengthens domestic capabilities and generates economic opportunities. Pathak highlighted that the project will significantly contribute to establishing a sustainable and self-reliant circular economy for plastics in India, reducing dependence on imported crude oil.
Mr. Suhas Dixit, CEO of APChemi, expressed the importance of this collaboration, describing it as a pivotal moment in their mission to transform the plastic waste crisis into an economic opportunity while restoring environmental balance. He stated that their technology fills a crucial gap in plastic circularity by removing corrosives and catalyst poisons from pyrolysis oil, enabling the production of high-value circular plastics from waste that would otherwise contribute to pollution.
