Tanya Roberts: Bond Girl and Television Star

Tanya Roberts (October 15, 1949 – January 4, 2021) was an American actress. She is best known for playing Bond girl Stacey Sutton in A View to a Kill (1985), Julie Rogers in the final season of Charlie’s Angels (1980–1981), and Midge Pinciotti on That ’70s Show (1998–2004).

Early Life and Education

Tanya Roberts was born Victoria Leigh Blum on October 15, 1949, in Manhattan, New York City, to Oscar Blum and Dorothy Smith. Her father was of Jewish descent; her mother was of English or Irish descent. Roberts had one older sister, Barbara. Her paternal grandfather, Theodor Blum, was born in Vienna, Austria, and immigrated to New York in 1904, where he did pioneering work in local anesthesia and dental X-ray technology. Oscar Blum earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1934.

The family lived in several New York locations during Roberts’s childhood, including Hewlett in Hempstead and later Scarsdale. After meeting psychology student Barry Roberts while waiting in line for a movie, Victoria Blum proposed to him in a subway station. They married in 1973. While Barry pursued screenwriting, she studied acting at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg and Uta Hagen, adopting the stage name Tanya Roberts.

Career and Achievements

Roberts began her career as a model, appearing in television commercials for Excedrin, Ultra Brite, Clairol, and Cool Ray sunglasses. She also worked as an Arthur Murray dance instructor and performed in off-Broadway productions of Picnic and Antigone. Her film debut came in 1975 with The Last Victim, followed by the comedy The Yum-Yum Girls (1976). In 1977, the couple moved to Hollywood, where Roberts appeared in The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover and Fingers (1978).

In summer 1980, Roberts was selected from approximately 2,000 candidates to replace Shelley Hack as Julie Rogers in the fifth and final season of Charlie’s Angels. She played a streetwise fighter who relied more on her fists than her gun. Despite being featured on the cover of People magazine with speculation about whether she could save the series, Charlie’s Angels was canceled in June 1981 after poor ratings.

Throughout the 1980s, Roberts appeared in numerous films. She played Kiri in the cult adventure film The Beastmaster (1982) and was featured in a nude pictorial in the October 1982 issue of Playboy. She appeared as Stacey Sutton opposite Roger Moore in the James Bond film A View to a Kill (1985), a role originally offered to Priscilla Presley. She starred as the title character in Sheena: Queen of the Jungle (1984), which was a box-office failure. Other 1980s credits included Night Eyes, Body Slam (1987), and Purgatory. She also recorded reference footage for the animated adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.

Roberts appeared in the erotic thriller Inner Sanctum (1991) alongside Margaux Hemingway. From 1998 to 2004, she played Midge Pinciotti on the sitcom That ’70s Show, a role that became her most enduring television presence.

Notable Events and Milestones

Roberts’s breakthrough moment came in November 1980 when she debuted on Charlie’s Angels, generating significant media attention as the show’s potential savior. Her appearance in A View to a Kill in 1985 marked her most prominent film role, though it resulted in a second Razzie Award nomination. Film critic Pauline Kael of The New Yorker described Roberts as having “a staring, comic-book opaqueness” and being “a walking, talking icon” following her role in Sheena: Queen of the Jungle.

Awards and Honors

Roberts received two nominations for the Razzie Award for Worst Actress: one for her role in Sheena: Queen of the Jungle (1984) and another following her appearance in A View to a Kill (1985).
