Tackling Stubble Burning: A Call for Systemic Solutions
On National Energy Conservation Day 2024, Vice-President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the urgent need for systemic solutions to the persistent issue of stubble burning. Speaking at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, he highlighted the severe environmental consequences that result from this practice, particularly in the National Capital. Dhankhar urged collective action, stating that the responsibility should not fall solely on individuals. According to him, these texts serve as a “survival manual” for addressing the current climate emergency.
Dhankhar believes that the wisdom embedded in these ancient teachings can inspire modern solutions to environmental challenges. He argued that conservation has always been a fundamental aspect of life in Indian culture. By revisiting these teachings, society can find valuable insights into sustainable living and resource management. This perspective encourages a shift in mindset, urging individuals and communities to prioritize environmental stewardship as a way of life.
Constitutional Duties and Responsible Resource Utilization
The Vice-President also highlighted the constitutional responsibilities that citizens have towards environmental conservation. He referenced Article 51A, which outlines the fundamental duties of every citizen, including the duty to protect and improve the natural environment. Dhankhar emphasized that rights should not overshadow these responsibilities, especially in times of crisis.
He called for a collective reevaluation of how natural resources are utilized. Dhankhar warned against the mindset that equates financial capability with the right to exploit resources. He stressed that energy and natural resources belong to all of humanity, and their use should be optimized for the benefit of future generations. This call for responsible consumption aligns with the broader goal of sustainable development, urging individuals to consider the impact of their choices on the environment.
