Switch 2 Adjusts Sales Forecast Amidst US Market Conditions

Nintendo recently announced its sales expectations for the upcoming Switch 2 during a quarterly earnings call, projecting 15 million units to be sold in the fiscal year following its launch next month. While industry analysts view this estimate as conservative due to the anticipated high demand for the hybrid console, Nintendo attributes its cautious forecast to the device’s higher price point. The company also clarified that recent U.S. tariffs did not influence its sales projections.

Switch 2 Price a Factor in Sales Forecast

During a recent investor Q&A, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa discussed the sales projections for the Switch 2, aiming to match the original Switch’s performance in the first ten months after its launch in March 2017. Furukawa acknowledged that the Switch 2’s price, starting at $449.99 in the U.S., presents challenges for early adopters. He emphasized that the new console’s ability to play compatible Nintendo Switch software would help bridge the gap between the two platforms. To encourage early adoption, Nintendo plans to bundle software with the hardware, aiming for a launch that mirrors the success of the original Switch.

Furukawa’s comments reflect a strategic approach to sales, recognizing the potential hurdles posed by the higher price. He expressed confidence in the Switch 2’s capabilities and the continuity it offers to existing Nintendo Switch users. The company is focused on creating a strong initial market presence, similar to what was achieved with the original console.

US Tariffs Did Not Affect Forecast

Despite the recent announcement of tariffs on imported goods by the U.S. government, Furukawa stated that these developments did not impact Nintendo’s sales projections for the Switch 2. He clarified that the company’s hardware production capacity was not a limiting factor in setting the sales forecast. Furukawa emphasized that external factors, including the tariff situation and potential economic downturns, were not considered when estimating sales volume.

To achieve the ambitious goal of selling 15 million units, Nintendo plans to ramp up production significantly. Furukawa noted that the company is committed to enhancing its production capabilities to meet anticipated demand. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the Switch 2 can achieve a successful launch and maintain momentum in the market.

Nintendo Switch 2 Demand

The demand for the Switch 2 has been remarkable, even with its higher price compared to the original model. In Japan, Nintendo reported receiving 2.2 million applications for the console’s lottery sale, far surpassing expectations. Furukawa indicated that many applicants would not be selected due to the overwhelming interest. In the U.S., pre-orders for the Switch 2 quickly sold out at various retailers, indicating strong consumer enthusiasm.

Furukawa acknowledged the positive reception of the Switch 2 during promotional events and the high volume of pre-order applications. However, he cautioned that sustaining sales momentum beyond the initial launch period could be challenging. The company is aware that while the launch may generate excitement, maintaining that interest through the holiday season and into the following year will require strategic planning.
