Surge in Global Rocket Launches in 2024

The year 2024 witnessed a remarkable surge in global rocket launches, with a total of 259 recorded liftoffs. This increase marks the fourth consecutive year of growth in spaceflight activity. On average, a launch occurred approximately every 34 hours. Several factors contributed to this upward trend, including a rise in commercial satellite deployments, national security initiatives, and a growing focus on independent launch capabilities among various nations. Industry experts are optimistic about the future, predicting an even busier year ahead as new rockets and commercial projects come into play.

Increased Launch Frequency and Regional Contributions

The expansion of global launch operations is expected to continue into 2025, according to The Space Report published by the Space Foundation. A standout performer in this growth is SpaceX, which conducted an impressive 132 Falcon 9 launches last year. This figure represents over half of all global launches. Many of these missions were dedicated to expanding SpaceX’s Starlink network, which now provides internet service to millions of customers worldwide.

Military satellite deployments also saw a significant increase, with an 86 percent rise reported. SpaceX played a crucial role here, launching over 100 satellites for the U.S. military’s Starshield constellation. This classified network aims to bolster national security. The United States continues to dominate the space launch sector, outpacing China’s activity by a ratio of more than 2-to-1. Meanwhile, Russia has ramped up its satellite deployments, placing 98 new spacecraft into orbit. Many of these satellites focus on maritime monitoring and security operations, highlighting the global competition in space.

New Rockets and Commercial Expansion in 2025

As we move into 2025, multiple new rockets are set to enter service, which will likely accelerate launch rates even further. Blue Origin’s New Glenn successfully reached orbit last month, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to SpaceX’s Falcon 9. This rocket is expected to play a significant role in Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which aims to create a satellite internet network akin to Starlink.

Additionally, Sierra Space is gearing up for the first flight of its Dream Chaser spaceplane. This mission is expected to reach the International Space Station aboard a Vulcan rocket no earlier than May. Rocket Lab is also making strides with its partially reusable Neutron rocket, which is scheduled for its inaugural flight in mid-2025. These developments indicate a vibrant commercial space sector that is rapidly evolving and expanding.

Regulatory Developments and European Launch Initiatives

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has introduced a streamlined regulatory framework aimed at accelerating commercial space activities. This new framework includes additional spectrum allocation and revised licensing procedures, which are expected to ease restrictions on private sector launches. Such regulatory changes are crucial for fostering innovation and growth in the space industry.

European nations are also making strides in developing independent launch capabilities. French company Latitude is preparing to launch its Zephyr rocket, while Germany’s Rocket Factory Augsburg is working on its RFA One rocket. The U.K.’s Orbex and Scotland-based Skyrora are both advancing their respective small launch vehicle projects, with maiden flights anticipated later this year. In Australia, Gilmour Space is gearing up for the inaugural flight of its Eris rocket, marking a significant milestone as the first locally built launch vehicle to operate from Australian soil. These initiatives reflect a broader trend of countries striving for sovereign access to space through smaller, dedicated launch vehicles, enhancing global competition in the aerospace sector.
