SUFALAM 2025: India’s Vision for Global Food Security

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), in partnership with the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM)-Kundli, successfully hosted the SUFALAM 2025 event on April 25-26, 2025. This two-day conclave attracted over 500 participants from 23 states, including industry leaders, academics, investors, and aspiring entrepreneurs. The event featured a mix of motivational talks, technical sessions, and panel discussions aimed at fostering innovation and collaboration within India’s food processing sector.

Inspiring Talks and Technical Sessions

The second day of SUFALAM 2025 kicked off with an energizing session where young entrepreneurs shared their personal journeys and innovative ideas. This was followed by a keynote address on “Government Funding & Policy Support for Start-ups,” presented by representatives from Start-up India. They provided valuable insights into various funding schemes and policy initiatives designed to support emerging businesses. Additionally, Dr. T. Prasad, a professor at IIM Mumbai, led a motivational session titled “Staying Resilient in the Start-up World,” offering practical advice on overcoming challenges and nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset.

The day also featured a dynamic panel discussion focused on “Sustainable Food Solutions.” This session explored cutting-edge sustainable technologies and best practices for environmentally responsible food production. Mr. Sanjay Khajuria, former Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Nestle Ltd., delivered a keynote address that set the stage for this important discussion. The insights shared during these sessions aimed to empower participants with the knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of the food processing industry.

Government Initiatives and Support for Micro-Enterprises

In the concluding session, Dr. Subrata Gupta, Secretary of MoFPI, elaborated on the PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFPE) Scheme. He highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting micro-enterprises in the food processing sector. This initiative aims to enhance the capabilities of small businesses, providing them with the necessary resources and guidance to thrive in a competitive market. The discussions underscored the importance of government support in fostering a robust ecosystem for food processing enterprises.

Earlier in the event, Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, Sh. Chirag Paswan, inaugurated the conclave and the accompanying exhibition. The event showcased 65 exhibitors from 20 states, reflecting the rich diversity and innovation present in India’s food processing landscape. The event’s reach extended beyond physical attendance, as it was broadcast live on NIFTEM-K’s YouTube channel, attracting over 2,600 online participants.

Technology Transfer and Collaborations

One of the standout moments of SUFALAM 2025 was the technology transfer of the Millet Nutribar, developed by Dr. Komal Chauhan and her team, to M/s SMILLET in Karnal, Haryana. Additionally, the technology for makhana-based cookies, created by Dr. Anand Kishore and his team, was transferred to M/s Patliputra Foods in Bihar. These technology transfers are significant steps toward enhancing innovation in the food processing sector.

Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between NIFTEM-K and the Food Industry Capacity and Skill Initiative (FICSI). This partnership aims to unlock new opportunities in food technology while bolstering skill development and innovation within the industry. Such collaborations are essential for driving progress and ensuring that the food processing sector remains competitive and sustainable.

Campus Tour and Future Prospects

Delegates concluded their experience at SUFALAM 2025 with a guided tour of the NIFTEM-K campus. They visited the Pilot Plant and Laboratory Facilities, gaining firsthand insights into ongoing research and innovation in food processing. This tour provided participants with a deeper understanding of the practical applications of the knowledge shared during the conclave.

Dr. Harinder Singh Oberoi, Director of NIFTEM-K, expressed that the successful conclusion of SUFALAM 2025 reaffirmed the commitment of MoFPI and NIFTEM-K to fostering innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship in India’s food processing sector. The event aimed to empower a new generation of leaders and change-makers, ensuring a bright future for the industry.
