Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project Achieves Construction of Dam till Top Level

In a significant milestone towards the completion of the 2,000 Mega Watt Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project located in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and executed by NHPC Limited, the construction of the dam up to the upper level of Elevation Level (EL) 210 M was completed in all blocks on June 29, 2023. [Elevation level here means height with respect to mean sea level.] Union Minister for Energy and New and Renewable Energy Shri RK Singh had reviewed the progress of the project on 31 May 2023 at which time he was informed that the project had achieved significant progress in concrete of the dam , with 14 blocks having reached top level of 210 meters and the remaining two blocks expected to be completed by June 2023.

NHPC has reported that more than 90% of the total project work has already been completed. The construction of all major components including the dam, power station and hydromechanical works is moving rapidly towards completion.

The remaining radial gate works will be completed after the monsoon season and power generation is expected to begin by the end of the 2023-24 financial year.

Upon completion, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project will generate approximately 7,500 million kilowatt-hours of energy per year, 90 percent reliable a year.

NHPC Limited started the construction works of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in January 2005 after obtaining the clearing of the forest on 12 October 2004. However, due to the unrest and protests from local stakeholders, the construction works of the project they were blocked from December 2011 to October 2019. The construction of the project resumed from October 15, 2019, after the authorization of the National Court of the Greens.
