The Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) is a significant initiative by the Indian government aimed at transforming the healthcare landscape in the country. Launched with a total outlay of ₹64,180 crores, this centrally sponsored scheme runs from 2021 to 2026. Objectives of PM-ABHIM

Another significant aspect of the scheme is the establishment of 3,382 Block Public Health Units (BPHUs) at the block level. These units will play a vital role in local health management. Furthermore, the initiative includes setting up 730 District Integrated Public Health Labs (IPHL) across the country, ensuring that each district has access to essential laboratory services. Lastly, the establishment of 602 Critical Care Hospital Blocks (CCBs) in districts with populations exceeding 5 lakhs will enhance critical care facilities.
Implementation and Support Mechanisms
The implementation of PM-ABHIM is primarily the responsibility of state governments. The scheme operates within the existing framework of the National Health Mission, which provides a structured approach to public health and hospital management. While the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) offers technical and financial support, the actual execution lies with the states and Union Territories (UTs).
State health departments play a crucial role in raising awareness about the scheme. They conduct information, education, and communication (IEC) activities to ensure that the public is informed about the services available under PM-ABHIM.
