Stock Market Update: BSE Sensex Rises Over 300 Points; Nifty50 Performance

Indian equity markets opened positively on Monday, with the BSE Sensex surpassing 79,600 points and the Nifty50 exceeding 24,150 points. As of 9:20 AM, the BSE Sensex was trading at 79,582.96, reflecting an increase of 370 points or 0.47%. Meanwhile, the Nifty50 stood at 24,131.35, up by 92 points or 0.38%. Investors are keenly observing upcoming auto sales figures and key economic indicators, including the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and the HSBC Manufacturing PMI, amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.

Market Performance and Investor Sentiment

The Indian stock market’s resilience is noteworthy, particularly in light of the heightened uncertainty stemming from Indo-Pak tensions. Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, emphasized that the market has not fully accounted for the possibility of escalating conflict. He noted that foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been significant buyers, with net purchases amounting to โ‚น32,465 crores over the past eight days. This shift comes after a period of sustained selling, driven by the underperformance of U.S. stocks and bonds, as well as a weakening dollar. The continued buying by FIIs is seen as a stabilizing factor for the market.

Global Market Influences

On the global front, U.S. equities experienced gains on Friday, buoyed by positive corporate earnings and optimism regarding U.S.-China trade relations. Asian markets opened cautiously, reflecting a wait-and-see approach as investors monitor trade discussions and anticipate potential stimulus measures from China. The dollar remained stable, with market participants looking ahead to economic data releases that could shed light on the impact of U.S. trade policies.

Commodity Market Trends

In the commodities market, gold prices fell on Monday, influenced by improving U.S.-China trade relations and a strengthening dollar. Oil prices also saw slight increases amid ongoing uncertainties surrounding U.S.-China trade discussions, which are affecting growth outlook and demand. Additionally, concerns about OPEC+ supply dynamics continue to exert pressure on oil prices. On the investment front, foreign portfolio investors recorded a net purchase of โ‚น2,952 crores on Friday, while domestic institutional investors sold shares worth โ‚น3,539 crores. The net short position of FIIs decreased from โ‚น24,480 crores to โ‚น35,226 crores, indicating a shift in market dynamics.
