State Museum Conclave to Foster Collaboration and Excellence in Indian Museums

The Ministry of Culture is set to host a three-day State Museum Conclave at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, from August 1st to 3rd, 2024. This event aims to strengthen the collaboration between State Museums and the Central Government to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modiโ€™s vision for the โ€˜Yuga Yugeen Bharat Museum,โ€™ which seeks to incorporate global best practices.

The conclave will gather a diverse group of stakeholders, including Resident Commissioners, Directors of Museums, Superintendents, Curators, and Researchers from across the country. Senior Ministry officials, including the Joint Secretary of the GLAM Division and the Secretary of the Ministry, will also be present. The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, is scheduled to address the gathering.

This event marks the third phase in a series of capacity-building initiatives by the GLAM Division of the Ministry of Culture. It follows the successful inter-ministerial consultation held on June 14, 2004, and a collaborative workshop with museum professionals and France Museums from June 25-29, 2004. These initiatives have aimed to enhance the museum ecosystem in India.

The conclave will feature capacity-building workshops led by renowned Indian and international museum professionals, equipping state-level personnel with essential skills in collection management, archiving, and museum administration. Masterclasses will cover various topics, including architecture and materiality, global conservation practices, fine arts handling, collections management, curation, and museum management.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, the three-day forum will provide hands-on training and opportunities to network with potential collaborators for the โ€˜Yuga Yugeen Bharat Museumโ€™ (YYBM) project. The Ministry of Culture will also present an overview of available funding schemes, including the updated Museum Grant Scheme and the Scheme for Promotion of Culture of Science, to support state-level museum development initiatives.

The States have been invited to provide detailed insights into their respective collections, fostering a comprehensive understanding of Indiaโ€™s artefact wealth for the YYBM. This conclave represents a significant step towards achieving excellence in the Indian museum sector, aligning with global standards and practices.
