Starlink Expands in India: Elon Musk’s Company Engages with Data Centers and Telecoms for Broadband Rollout

Elon Musk‘s Starlink is making significant strides in India as it lays the groundwork for its satellite broadband services. The company is currently engaged in discussions with various data center operators, internet exchange providers, and telecom giants to establish a robust terrestrial infrastructure. With an estimated initial investment of around Rs 500 crore, Starlink aims to tap into India’s burgeoning market for satellite communications, having already secured necessary regulatory approvals and identified locations for ground stations.

Strategic Partnerships in the Making

Starlink is actively negotiating partnerships with several key players in the Indian telecommunications landscape. The company is in talks with data center operators such as Sify Technologies, STT, Equinix, and CtrlS Datacenters. Additionally, it is engaging with internet exchange providers like DE-CIX and Extreme, as well as major telecom companies including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Tata Communications. These collaborations are essential for creating the terrestrial ecosystem that will support satellite connectivity on a large scale. Analysts predict that the initial capital expenditure for these developments will be around Rs 500 crore, with letters of intent expected to be dispatched this month.

Regulatory Approvals and Infrastructure Development

Starlink has already obtained the necessary clearances from Indian authorities and has been allocated trial bandwidth. The company has finalized 17 locations for ground stations, which will facilitate the connection between its low-earth orbit satellites and terrestrial fiber and data networks. According to sources, Indian regulations require that all downlink traffic be stored and routed locally, which underscores the importance of Starlink’s early partnerships with fiber and data center providers. This strategic approach indicates that Starlink is preparing for a scalable operation in the Indian market.

Competition and Market Potential

In entering the Indian satellite communications market, Starlink will face competition from established players such as Eutelsat OneWeb, a venture backed by Bharti, and the Reliance Jio-SES joint venture. Other competitors include Amazon’s Project Kuiper and Globalstar, which is partnered with Apple. The Indian space economy is projected to grow significantly, reaching an estimated $44 billion by 2033, according to IN-SPACe. This growth potential presents a lucrative opportunity for Starlink as it seeks to establish its presence in the region.

Future Plans and Subscriber Verification

Starlink is also moving forward with integration agreements, having recently confirmed a partnership with DE-CIX India. This collaboration is expected to enhance high-speed connectivity, particularly for latency-sensitive applications such as streaming and online gaming. The Indian government has granted Starlink a unified license, contingent upon compliance with local security regulations, including the mandatory local routing of traffic. Minister of State for Communications, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, highlighted that these services will create employment opportunities through the installation and maintenance of networks and user terminals. Starlink plans to utilize Aadhaar authentication for subscriber verification and has the capacity to onboard approximately 2 million customers in India.
