This recommendation could potentially make satellite internet services more expensive than traditional wired and wireless broadband options.
In addition to the proposed user charge, Starlink would also be required to pay 4 percent of its total adjusted gross revenue (AGR), with a minimum annual fee of Rs. 3,500 for each spectrum block. Furthermore, an 8 percent licensing fee would apply for offering commercial services in the country. However, these recommendations are still awaiting government approval.
Despite the high costs associated with licensing and spectrum fees, Starlink and other satellite communication companies are expected to launch their services at competitive prices. Reports indicate that Starlink’s plans could be priced below Rs. 850 per month, with unlimited data included in promotional offers. However, opting for Roam plans requires an extra charge of $299 (approximately Rs. 25,400) for the Starlink Mini Kit.
