Sophie Guillemin: French Actress and Filmmaker

Sophie Guillemin (1 December 1977 –) is a French actress. She earned a César nomination for best new female in 1999 for her role in L’Ennui.

Early Life and Education

Sophie Guillemin was born on 1 December 1977. Details of her early life and formal education are not extensively documented in available sources.

Career and Achievements

Guillemin began her acting career pursuing minor roles to earn income. After director Cédric Kahn spent two years searching for a lead actress, she joined the cast of L’Ennui, a 1998 film that became her breakthrough. Journalist Gérard Lefort of Libération noted her distinctive presence, writing that she had established herself by exploiting her “body of Venus and her soul of Greek antiquity.”

Throughout the early 2000s, she appeared in comedies including On fait comme on a dit with Gad Elmaleh and Ça ira mieux demain directed by Jeanne Labrune with Nathalie Baye. She also took roles in social dramas and thrillers, notably playing the best friend of Audrey Tautou in À la folie… pas du tout and appearing opposite Sergi Lopez in Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien (2000), for which she received another César nomination for best upcoming female.

In 2002, Guillemin stepped back from filming. She later explained that she spent five years focusing on raising her daughter before gradually returning to cinema. By 2008, she was active again, appearing in films such as Office Clerk with Roschdy Zem, Gamines with Sylvie Testud, and Un chat un chat with Chiara Mastroianni. She continued working regularly in subsequent years, including roles in Gérard Depardieu’s Petite Fille and Jean Becker’s La Tête en friche.

Beyond acting, Guillemin expanded into directing and producing. In 2011, she wrote, directed, and produced her first short film, L’Essentiel féminin, a burlesque comedy co-produced by Elkin Communication and shown in cinemas and on Orange Cinema Series. In 2016, she directed her second short film, Heurts, with Pascale Arbillot. She also appeared in theatre, performing in The Vagina Monologues directed by Isabelle Rattier.

Her later work included experimental cinema with Philippe Grandrieux in Despite the Night (2014) alongside Ariane Labed and Paul Hamy, and collaboration with coach Pascal Luneau in 304 le casting (2015) with Jérémy Frérot. In 2016, she starred in Glacé, an M6 series adapted from Bernard Minier’s bestseller, reuniting with Charles Berling eighteen years after L’Ennui. In 2018, she was working on her first feature film, Black Nana. As of January 2024, her most recent role was playing Martine in Monsieur le maire, directed by Karin Blanc and Michel Tavares.

Notable Events and Milestones

Guillemin converted to Islam at age 22 and wore a hijab as part of her spiritual practice. She later described the difficult public reaction to this choice, particularly within the film industry, noting that rumors circulated about her career and personal life. After five years away from acting, she removed the hijab, stating that she felt restricted and preferred to maintain her faith privately while returning to her work.

In 2017, while on the set of the TV movie Remember Us, she met actor Thierry Godard. The couple married in August 2018. At the time they met, Godard was mourning the loss of his partner, actress and drama teacher Blanche Veisberg, who had died of cancer in 2017.

Guillemin received a César nomination in 1999 in the best new female category for her role in L’Ennui. She earned a second César nomination for best upcoming female for her performance in Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien (2000).
