Sony Plans PlayStation Event for June

Sony is set to make a splash in the gaming world with a new showcase scheduled for next month. While details remain under wraps, industry insider Jeff Grubb suggests that the event will likely take the form of a State of Play presentation rather than a full PlayStation Showcase. This announcement follows the last State of Play in February, where Sony unveiled its first-party action game, Saros, developed by Housemarque.
Sony Planning a Games Showcase Event for June
According to Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb, Sony has been deliberating between hosting a full-length PlayStation Showcase and a State of Play event this summer. In a recent episode of the Game Mess Mornings podcast, Grubb revealed that the company is leaning towards a State of Play presentation in June. He noted that he had not heard of any events planned for May, indicating that something significant is on the horizon for June.
Grubb expressed uncertainty about the scale of the upcoming event, stating, โI don’t think it’s going to be a big Showcase.โ He mentioned that discussions had been ongoing about the format, but it seems Sony has opted for a State of Play. While he is not completely certain, Grubb feels confident that a State of Play is in the works for next month.
What to Expect From State of Play
State of Play events are typically shorter and focus on third-party announcements, along with updates on first-party titles. The last State of Play showcased several third-party games, including MindsEye, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and Tides of Annihilation. Notably, it also featured the reveal of Saros, the latest project from Housemarque, known for their work on Returnal.
In contrast, the PlayStation Showcase is a more extensive event that highlights first-party announcements and is usually held once a year. The last Showcase took place in 2023, and Sony did not host the event in 2024, raising questions about whether it will return in 2025. Despite this, there is ample material for Sony to present next month, as multiple first-party studios are actively developing new projects.
Naughty Dog is working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and another unannounced title, while Insomniac Games is developing Wolverine. Additionally, Sucker Punch is preparing to launch Ghost of Yotei, a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, in October 2025. Insomniac has remained tight-lipped about Wolverine since its announcement in 2021, making next monthโs presentation a potential opportunity for updates on this highly anticipated title.
Speculations on Future Announcements
Grubb hinted that Sony might be preparing for a more significant announcement during the upcoming State of Play. He noted that the company has been particularly guarded about the details surrounding the event, which adds an air of mystery to what fans can expect. โJust getting the details that there’s something happening in June was kind of difficult to come by, so it does make me feel like they are hiding some stuff,โ he speculated.
Moreover, the God of War developer, Santa Monica Studio, has not disclosed its next project. However, Grubb previously reported that the studio is working on a spinoff set in the original Greek mythology, which could potentially launch later this year. As anticipation builds for the June event, fans are eager to see what surprises Sony has in store, making it a highly anticipated date on the gaming calendar.
