Sony Announces State of Play Broadcast for June 4: Here’s How

Sony has officially announced a State of Play presentation scheduled for June 4, focusing on upcoming PS5 games. This event will showcase updates from various third-party developers and is expected to include news about some first-party PlayStation titles. Initially, there was speculation about whether Sony would host a full-length PlayStation Showcase or a shorter State of Play, but the company has opted for the latter this summer.

Details of the State of Play Broadcast

The upcoming State of Play broadcast will last over 40 minutes, as confirmed by Sony on the PlayStation Blog. While the company has not disclosed the specific games that will be featured, it promises updates on “must-play games” for the PS5. Sony emphasized that the event will highlight a selection of exciting titles from creators around the world.

The livestream will be available in English on June 4 at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET / 11 PM CEST (or June 6 at 2:30 AM IST) via PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch channels. Viewers can tune in to watch the full show when it begins, with the anticipation building around what announcements will be made.

This announcement indicates that Sony is likely forgoing a full-length PlayStation Showcase this year. Reports suggest that the company was weighing the options between hosting a Showcase or a State of Play event this summer. Industry insider Jeff Grubb mentioned in February that Sony was internally deliberating this decision.

What to Expect from the Event

As excitement builds for the State of Play, players are hopeful for significant updates, especially given Sony’s recent history of limited first-party reveals. In previous broadcasts, the company showcased titles like Sucker Punch’s “Ghost of Yotei” and Housemarque’s “Saros.” However, many first-party studios have not provided updates on their projects for an extended period.

For instance, Insomniac Games has not shared any new information about “Wolverine” since its announcement in 2021. Similarly, Santa Monica Studio, known for its work on “God of War,” has remained silent regarding its next project, which is rumored to be a spinoff set in the original Greek mythology of the series. Both studios are potential candidates for features in the upcoming State of Play.

Additionally, the event may include updates on previously announced titles such as “Death Stranding 2,” “Phantom Blade Zero,” and “Marathon,” among others. Fans are eager to see what new content and information will be revealed.

Future of PlayStation Events

The confirmation of the State of Play suggests that Sony may not hold a full-length PlayStation Showcase this year, continuing a trend from 2023 when the company also skipped the event. Historically, the Showcase is a larger-scale presentation that focuses on significant updates and reveals for first-party games, typically held once a year.

The last PlayStation Showcase took place in 2023, and with the current announcement, it appears that Sony may choose to delay such an event until 2025. However, the company could still surprise fans with a Showcase later down the line, depending on the development progress of its first-party titles and the overall gaming landscape.
