Signal Update Blocks Microsoft AI Recall Feature
Signal, the well-known privacy-centric messaging platform, has introduced a new security feature aimed at countering Microsoft’s controversial Recall feature. This update, named Screen Security, is designed to prevent devices from taking screenshots of the app’s interface. The San Francisco-based company stated that it felt compelled to implement this measure due to limited options for safeguarding user privacy against Microsoft’s actions. Once the update is installed, Screen Security will be enabled by default on all Windows 11 devices.
Signal’s Response to Microsoft’s Recall Feature
In a recent blog post, Signal elaborated on the rationale behind the new Screen Security feature. Microsoft began rolling out its AI-powered Recall feature to all Copilot+ PCs at the end of last month. Recall, which was first introduced in May 2024, functions as an on-device search history tracker that continuously captures screenshots of user activity. This allows the AI to provide accurate information when users inquire about their past actions on specific dates and times. However, the feature has drawn criticism from security experts and users alike due to its inadequate privacy controls.
Despite Microsoft’s efforts to enhance the Recall feature over the past year, including making it opt-in rather than default, Signal argues that app developers were not given adequate tools to deny OS-level AI systems access to sensitive chat information. In response to these privacy concerns, Signal has implemented a Digital Rights Management (DRM) flag on its app window. This technology, similar to what streaming services like Netflix use, prevents devices from capturing screenshots of the app’s content. The company has also made it clear that this security feature will be automatically activated on Windows 11 systems.
Accessibility Considerations
While Signal’s new feature aims to bolster user privacy, the company has acknowledged potential accessibility challenges. The Screen Security setting may interfere with the functionality of screen readers and magnification tools, which are essential for users with visual impairments. However, users have the option to disable this feature if they choose. To do so, they can navigate to the Privacy section within Signal Settings, where they will find the Screen Security option available for deactivation.
It is important to note that disabling this feature on Signal Desktop for Windows 11 will trigger a warning message. This alert informs users that turning off Screen Security could allow Microsoft Windows to capture screenshots of Signal, potentially compromising privacy. Users must confirm this warning before proceeding to disable the feature.

Signal has expressed hope that AI developers, particularly those working on systems like Recall, will consider the privacy implications of their technologies more seriously in the future. The company emphasized that messaging applications like Signal should not have to resort to unconventional methods to protect user privacy without the support of proper developer tools.
