Shah Rukh Khan Shines at WAVES 2025 Inaugural Ceremony
The WAVES Summit 2025 kicked off today at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, drawing a star-studded crowd from the Indian film industry. The event, which aims to serve as a global platform for the future of audio-visual entertainment, was marked by a warm welcome from Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and a speech from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit not only celebrates Indian cinema’s global impact but also pays tribute to its rich legacy through commemorative initiatives.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Enthusiastic Welcome
Shah Rukh Khan, the charismatic host of the WAVES Summit, expressed his honor in welcoming attendees, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He emphasized the summit’s role as a global platform for creators and innovators, highlighting its potential to merge art and technology. Khan’s heartfelt greeting included a bow to the dignitaries, setting a respectful tone for the event. He described WAVES as a catalyst for creativity and innovation, urging industry leaders to unite in driving Indian creativity on the world stage. The summit commenced with a special performance composed by Oscar-winning musician M M Keeravani, further enhancing the event’s celebratory atmosphere.
Prime Minister Modi’s Remarks on Indian Cinema
During his address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the global reach of Indian cinema, citing the enduring popularity of legends like Raj Kapoor and Satyajit Ray. He also acknowledged the recent success of the film “RRR” at the Oscars, underscoring the international recognition of Indian storytelling. Modi’s remarks highlighted the importance of cinema as a cultural ambassador for India, showcasing the country’s rich heritage and artistic achievements. His presence at the summit reinforced the government’s commitment to supporting the film industry and promoting its growth on a global scale.
A Tribute to Cinema Legends
Actor Nagarjuna took the stage to celebrate the spirit of Indian cinema, reflecting on its profound impact on generations. He noted the recent release of stamps commemorating four cinema legends during the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). At WAVES, Nagarjuna announced that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting would release a commemorative miniature sheet of postage stamps honoring five visionaries of Indian cinema, marking 100 years since their birth. This initiative aims to preserve and honor the legacy of these influential figures, including Guru Dutt and Ritwik Ghatak, showcasing the government’s dedication to celebrating India’s cinematic history.
Controversy Over Delegate Access
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the event faced criticism due to logistical issues. Over 1,000 delegates were left waiting outside the venue for nearly three hours, as security personnel delayed entry until Prime Minister Modi’s departure. This caused frustration among attendees, leading to a disturbance outside the venue. Reports indicated that even some prominent celebrities were denied access and had to wait on the streets, raising concerns about the event’s management. Eventually, the gates opened, allowing delegates to enter, but the incident highlighted the challenges faced in organizing such a high-profile event.
