Severe Flooding Hits India’s ‘Silicon Valley’ Following Intense Rainfall
Parts of Bengaluru, often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley, are grappling with severe flooding following unprecedented rainfall. The city has been placed on high alert for additional pre-monsoon showers due to cyclonic activity over the Andaman Sea. Tragically, three individuals, including a 12-year-old boy, lost their lives in rain-related incidents on Monday, prompting major technology firms to advise employees to work from home as road conditions deteriorate.
Record Rainfall and Its Impact
On Monday, Bengaluru experienced over 100 mm (approximately 4 inches) of rain, marking the heaviest downpour since 2011. This level of rainfall is considered “rare” for the city, according to CS Patil, a director at the regional weather department. The intense precipitation has led to significant water-logging, disrupting daily life and causing extensive property damage. In one incident, a compound wall at the i-Zed software firm collapsed, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old female employee. Videos circulating on social media depict commuters navigating knee-deep water, while numerous vehicles remain stranded on inundated streets. Additionally, some homes have reported water intrusion, exacerbating the crisis for residents.
Government Response and Public Concerns
In response to the flooding, local authorities have identified 210 flood-prone areas and are working tirelessly to address the situation. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reassured the public, stating, “There is no need for the people of Bengaluru to be worried.” However, the state government is facing scrutiny from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has criticized the Congress-led administration for its handling of rain-related issues. The BJP has called for the immediate release of 10 billion rupees (approximately $117 million) for relief efforts, arguing that the local government has failed to adequately address the city’s infrastructure challenges despite substantial financial investments.

The Karnataka state government has defended its actions, asserting that the flooding issues are not new and have been neglected for years across various administrations. Shivakumar emphasized that the current challenges are a result of long-standing problems rather than recent failures. Flooding has become a recurring issue in Bengaluru, with experts attributing the crisis to rapid urban development over the city’s lakes and wetlands, coupled with inadequate urban planning. The situation has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many residents expressing frustration over the city’s deteriorating infrastructure and the persistent flooding of roads.
