The Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, delivered an inspiring address to students and faculty at Sherwood College in Nainital, Uttarakhand, during the institution’s 156th Founders’ Day celebration. In his address, Vice-President Dhankhar encouraged students to adopt a broader perspective when setting their goals. He stated, “Don’t have narrow goals. Have a goal for society, for humanity, for the nation.” He stressed that history remembers those who have contributed to society, urging students to embody a spirit of nationalism. He remarked that true patriotism requires an unwavering commitment to the nation, which he described as deserving of such dedication due to its rich civilizational history spanning 5,000 years. Dhankhar’s message resonated with the audience, as he called for a collective effort to uplift the nation through education and social responsibility.

The Importance of Quality Education

Vice-President Dhankhar underscored the critical role of quality education in a democratic society. He described education as a “gift of God” and a powerful equalizer that can combat inequities and injustices. He urged students to recognize the privilege of receiving quality education in a nation of 1.4 billion people, emphasizing that it is essential for achieving equality and justice. Dhankhar also addressed parents, advising them not to impose their aspirations on their children. He warned that such pressure could lead to a narrow pursuit of wealth and power, stifling creativity and innovation. Instead, he encouraged parents to support their children’s unique paths, fostering a generation of thinkers and leaders.

During his speech, Dhankhar reflected on India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation, or “Viksit Bharat.” He noted that the country is no longer merely a nation of potential but is actively realizing its capabilities. He highlighted the exponential economic growth and remarkable infrastructure development witnessed over the past decade. The Vice-President urged students to contribute to this ongoing progress, stating that achieving developed nation status is not just a dream but a destination that India is poised to reach. He called on the youth to harness their potential and drive change, emphasizing the importance of their role in shaping the future of the nation.

Honoring Alumni and Inspiring Future Generations

Shri Dhankhar paid tribute to the illustrious alumni of Sherwood College, including Major Som Nath Sharma, India’s first Param Vir Chakra recipient, and Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, who played a pivotal role in India’s military history. He reminded students that they are part of a legacy built by these legends and that their achievements should inspire them to set new benchmarks. The Vice-President encouraged the youth to be catalysts for change, highlighting India’s demographic advantage with a median age of 28. He concluded by urging students to adapt to rapid technological advancements and to contribute positively to a nation that represents one-sixth of humanity.
