Security Council President Holds Press Conference on Programme

The United Nations Security Council is set to hold a significant open high-level debate on maritime security on May 20, under the theme of maintaining international peace and security. This event, titled โ€œStrengthening Maritime Security through International Cooperation for Global Security,โ€ will be chaired by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres as the main briefer. The debate aims to emphasize the importance of maritime security, particularly in protecting freedom of navigation and securing global supply chains.

Focus on Maritime Security

The upcoming debate on maritime security reflects Greece’s commitment to addressing critical global issues. Evangelos C. Sekeris, Greece’s representative at the UN, highlighted the country’s status as a maritime nation and home to one of the world’s largest merchant fleets. By elevating the representation to the highest political level, Greece aims to underscore the significance of maritime security. Many member states recognize the need to protect freedom of navigation and secure global supply chains, especially given the complexities and threats present in maritime environments. The event will also feature insights from the President of the Board of Directors of the Union of Greek Shipowners, further enriching the discussion.

Upcoming Council Activities

In addition to the maritime security debate, the Security Council has a busy agenda for May. On May 22, the Council will hold its annual open debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, which will also be elevated to the ministerial level. This session will be chaired by Greece’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, and will include briefings from senior UN officials and civil society representatives. Other key discussions scheduled for the month include a semi-annual debate on Bosnia and Herzegovina on May 6, a briefing on Yemen on May 14, and a session on Libya on May 16. The Council will also address the situation in Syria on May 21 and conduct elections for a new judge to the International Court of Justice on May 27.

Addressing Global Tensions

During the press conference, Sekeris addressed various global tensions, including the situation in South Asia. He acknowledged the ongoing and evolving nature of the issues between India and Pakistan, particularly following a recent statement condemning an attack in Jammu and Kashmir. He expressed concern over the rising tensions and indicated that the Council is prepared to convene if the situation does not de-escalate. Additionally, he noted the potential for discussions on non-proliferation issues, including developments in Iran, Ukraine, and North Korea, as these matters remain pressing on the global agenda.

Humanitarian Concerns and Future Discussions

Sekeris also touched upon the humanitarian situation in Gaza, emphasizing Greece’s commitment to addressing this issue. He mentioned the upcoming meeting on May 28, which will focus on the Middle East and the Palestinian question. While he did not call for an emergency meeting on Gaza, he reiterated the importance of humanitarian considerations and the release of hostages. Furthermore, he provided updates on the situation in Syria, expressing cautious optimism regarding the new government’s initial actions. The Council remains engaged with various global challenges, including cross-border terrorism and the situation in Lebanon, where Sekeris noted improvements and ongoing support for UN efforts.
