Security Council Issues Press Statement Regarding Sudan

The United Nations Security Council has voiced serious concerns regarding the escalating violence in Sudan, particularly in El Fasher, North Darfur. In a press statement issued by Council President Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, the members condemned recent attacks on humanitarian workers and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The Council reiterated the need for accountability and emphasized the importance of protecting humanitarian operations amidst the ongoing conflict.

Escalating Violence in North Darfur

The Security Council’s statement highlights the alarming rise in violence across various regions of Sudan, with a specific focus on El Fasher in North Darfur. The Council recalled resolution 2736 (2024), which demands that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) cease their siege of El Fasher. The members urged for an immediate halt to the fighting and called for de-escalation in the area. This resolution underscores the international community’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in a region that has faced prolonged conflict.

Condemnation of Attacks on Humanitarian Workers

The Council members expressed strong condemnation of the attack on June 2, 2025, near Al Koma, which targeted a humanitarian convoy from the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of five humanitarian workers and injuries to several others, while also damaging critical humanitarian supplies and vehicles. The Security Council extended its condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Sudan, emphasizing the urgent need for an investigation into the attack and accountability for those responsible.

Impact on Humanitarian Operations

The ongoing conflict has severely impacted humanitarian operations in Sudan, with reports of air attacks by the RSF damaging essential civilian infrastructure in Port Sudan, Kassala, and Khartoum. The Security Council expressed deep concern over these developments, which hinder the delivery of vital aid to those in need. Members reminded all parties involved in the conflict of their responsibility to ensure the safety and security of UN and humanitarian personnel, as mandated by international law and resolution 2730 (2024). They reiterated that deliberate attacks against humanitarian workers could amount to war crimes.

Commitment to Sudan’s Sovereignty

In their statement, the Security Council reaffirmed its strong commitment to the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Sudan. The members called on all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law, including the Jeddah Declaration, and to respect international humanitarian and human rights laws. The Council’s unified stance reflects a collective effort to promote peace and protect the rights of civilians amidst the ongoing turmoil in Sudan.
