Security Council Issues Press Statement Regarding Sudan

In a press statement released today, the United Nations Security Council expressed grave concern regarding the escalating violence in and around El Fasher, North Darfur. The Council condemned the recent attacks on El Fasher and the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps for internally displaced persons, which have reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 400 civilians, including children and aid workers. The Council called for accountability for the perpetrators, particularly the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and urged an immediate cessation of hostilities in the region.

Condemnation of Attacks and Call for Accountability

The Security Council members strongly condemned the series of attacks carried out by the RSF in recent days. These assaults have not only targeted civilians but have also endangered humanitarian workers, with at least 11 aid workers reported among the casualties. The Council reiterated its demand for the RSF to halt its siege of El Fasher and called for an immediate end to the fighting. They emphasized the need for de-escalation in the area, highlighting the urgent necessity to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law.

Humanitarian Access and Protection of Civilians

In their statement, the Council members urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect and protect humanitarian personnel and their assets. They called for safe and unhindered access for humanitarian aid throughout Sudan, in line with international law and the United Nations’ guiding principles. The Council stressed the importance of allowing humanitarian organizations to operate freely to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the ongoing conflict. They also reminded all parties of their obligations under international law to ensure the safety of civilians and aid workers.

Encouragement for Political Dialogue and Peace Efforts

As the conflict in Sudan marks its two-year anniversary, the Security Council expressed deep concern over its impact on the population and the broader region. Council members urged the conflicting parties to engage in good faith political dialogue aimed at achieving a durable ceasefire and a comprehensive political process that is inclusive and led by Sudanese stakeholders. They encouraged the parties to utilize the opportunity presented by UN-led proximity talks to agree on steps that would lead to a sustainable resolution of the crisis. Additionally, the Council called on all Member States to refrain from actions that could exacerbate the conflict and to support efforts for lasting peace in Sudan.
