Revolutionary Hydrogen Power Solution for Telecom Towers

An innovative hydrogen fuel cell-based backup power system has been developed to enhance the reliability of telecom towers across India. This plug-and-play model not only supports the nationโ€™s renewable energy goals but also ensures uninterrupted connectivity for millions of users. With over a million telecom towers in the country, many located in remote areas, this solution addresses the challenges of maintaining continuous operations in regions with limited grid access.

Transitioning from Diesel to Clean Energy

India’s telecom infrastructure relies heavily on diesel generators for backup power, especially in remote locations where grid access is limited. However, these generators are costly and contribute significantly to carbon emissions. The introduction of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells presents a cleaner, more efficient alternative. These fuel cells generate electricity with water vapor as the only by-product, making them an environmentally friendly option for powering telecom towers during outages.

PEM fuel cells operate at relatively low temperatures and have quick start-up times, making them suitable for backup applications. They utilize hydrogen fuel, which can be easily stored and transported, and require far less maintenance compared to traditional diesel generators. The electrochemical process involved in PEM fuel cells allows hydrogen gas to react with oxygen, producing electricity and water, thus ensuring a sustainable energy source for telecom operations.

Government Support for Green Energy Solutions

The Indian government, through the Department of Telecommunications and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), is actively promoting the adoption of greener energy solutions. TRAI’s 2012 directive mandates that at least 50% of rural telecom towers and 33% of urban towers transition to hybrid renewable energy sources. The integration of PEM fuel cells aligns with this vision, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to conventional backup systems.

The Centre for Fuel Cell Technology (CFCT) at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) has spearheaded the development of this innovative fuel cell-based solution. A notable feature of this project is its plug-and-play model, which simplifies handling and transportation while addressing security concerns, making it practical for widespread deployment.

Successful Demonstration and Future Prospects

In a groundbreaking demonstration, ARCI showcased a mobile PEM fuel cell-based backup power solution for telecom towers. This unique setup allows the power generation unit to be shared among multiple towers, providing backup power where it is most needed. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for locations that are difficult to reach or maintain with traditional diesel generators.

The demonstration took place at a telecom tower operated by a prominent service provider within the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, in collaboration with Resicorre Technologies, Nashik. This initiative is part of a sponsored project under the Advanced Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Call โ€“ 2021 by the Department of Science and Technology, India. The project’s goal is to establish a reliable fuel cell-based backup power solution that ensures a steady hydrogen supply and enhances power resilience during outages.

As India continues to expand its digital infrastructure, the adoption of fuel cell technology represents a significant step toward cleaner and more reliable telecom operations. The successful deployment of PEM fuel cells for telecom towers is expected to promote the use of clean energy in the sector, ensuring uninterrupted service while significantly reducing carbon footprints.
