Reviving Navghar: A Community’s Fight for Mangrove Restoration
As the sun rises over Navghar, Vandana Patil reflects on the changing tides of her village’s coastline. Once abundant with crabs and fish, the sea has become less generous, a shift she attributes to the alarming decline of mangrove forests. The Decline of Mangroves and Its Impact
Vandana Patil stands on the damp sands of Navghar, recalling a time when the sea brimmed with life. “Earlier, we used to see unpredictable crab and fish catches and had to rely on other sources of livelihoods,” she laments. The root cause of this decline is clear: the unchecked destruction of mangroves, which serve as crucial protectors of the coastline. These towering trees not only stabilize the land but also provide habitat for marine life. However, many villagers remain unaware of the vital link between mangrove health and their own survival.
The situation prompted a significant intervention. The Government of India, alongside the Green Climate Fund and UNDP, launched a project aimed at enhancing climate resilience in coastal communities across Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha. This initiative focuses on conserving and restoring marine ecosystems, including mangroves, while simultaneously creating sustainable livelihoods for local residents.
A Community United for Change
In 2021, Navghar became a beacon of hope as the project established a Mangrove Co-Management Committee. This committee, composed of village members, the Gram Panchayat, and women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), was tasked with two primary goals: protecting the mangroves and revitalizing local livelihoods. Women, often the most affected by economic instability, were placed at the forefront of this initiative.
Through structured training, these women learned sustainable crab farming techniques, leading to the formation of new livelihood groups such as Healthy Harvest and Wild Crab Aqua Farm. These groups now cultivate mud crabs across two acres of coastal land while actively protecting mangroves from illegal logging. The results have been remarkable, with the community witnessing a resurgence in both marine life and economic stability.
Rohan Patil, president of the committee, highlights the shift in perception: “Through our campaigns and drives, we have raised awareness about mangroves and their link to healthy fish catches and livelihoods. People no longer see them as just trees—they see them as protectors.”
The Road to Recovery and Future Prospects
By 2023, the transformation of Navghar’s coastline was evident. The once-barren landscape is now dotted with thriving mangroves, which shield the land from erosion and storms, while the waters teem with life once more. Vandana shares the positive impact on her community: “The project helped us a lot. Earlier, women worked only seasonally. Now, we have employment throughout the year. Besides, we can farm crabs locally instead of traveling far.”
This revival is part of a larger movement across India, where communities are not just adapting to environmental changes but actively shaping their futures. The restoration of mangroves in Navghar exemplifies how ecological restoration can uplift local economies. Women like Vandana Patil are no longer passive observers of environmental degradation; they are now active custodians of their natural heritage, securing livelihoods while fostering resilience.
