Review of Power and Housing sectors in Leh
Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, visited the Union Territory of Ladakh to review the working of the power and housing departments. This three-day visit allowed the minister to gain a detailed overview of the departments’ operations and learn about their achievements from concerned officials. Overall, Shri Manohar Lal expressed satisfaction with the departments’ performance and assured them of assistance in overcoming any challenges they face due to the difficult terrain in the region.
During a meeting with the media, the minister shared his vision for Ladakh, stating that the goal is to achieve 100 percent processing of waste material. He was presented with a detailed report on this project, and he emphasized the ministry’s commitment to improving the working conditions of Safai Mitras to ensure their safety while performing their duties.
Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, Shri Manohar Lal instructed the finalization of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for water supply and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) projects in Leh and Kargil. The timely preparation and approval of these DPRs will contribute to the overall development and quality of life in both regions.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted the importance of addressing homelessness in Ladakh. A survey will be conducted to identify all homeless individuals, allowing them to avail the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Shri Manohar Lal also mentioned the provision of financial assistance to street vendors under the PM Swanidhi scheme, emphasizing the government’s commitment to leaving no one behind.
Recognizing the immense potential for solar power in Ladakh, the minister announced that work is underway for the establishment of a 13 GW solar power plant. This plant will not only meet the local energy requirements but also contribute to fulfilling the energy needs of other parts of the country.
In terms of power supply during the winter season, the minister assured uninterrupted power by meeting additional demands from the Government of India’s excess quota. He also pledged to address manpower issues in the Power department promptly.
Regarding the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, estimates amounting to Rs. 1,080 crore have been submitted by the UT administration, and approval is expected in the near future. Additionally, ongoing projects under the PM Deendayal Package will be completed by December this year.
Looking ahead, Shri Manohar Lal announced plans to set up power supply and distribution lines up to Nubra valley and Zanskar valley. These efforts will help meet the energy requirements of these regions, and the government is working tirelessly to overcome any obstacles associated with these projects.
