Rashtrapati Niketan in Dehradun to Open for Public Visits
Rashtrapati Niketan, the historic Presidential Retreat located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, is set to welcome the public starting June 24, 2025. This initiative aims to enhance citizen engagement with the President and the heritage of Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 186-year-old estate will join other presidential properties, including Rashtrapati Bhavan and Rashtrapati Nilayam, which have been open for public visits since 2023. Additionally, the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, will visit the estate on June 20, 2025, to oversee preparations and lay the foundation stone for a new ecological park.
Historical Significance of Rashtrapati Niketan
Rashtrapati Niketan, formerly known as Rashtrapati Ashiana, has a rich history as a training ground for the Presidentโs Bodyguards and their horses. This heritage site not only reflects the architectural grandeur of its time but also serves as a repository of curated artwork that narrates its legacy. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore the stables and meet the horses of the Presidentโs Bodyguard. The estate features several picturesque attractions, including the Lily Pond, Rockery Pond, Rose Garden, and Pergola, all designed to enhance the visitor experience.
Rashtrapati Tapovan: A Natural Retreat
In addition to Rashtrapati Niketan, the public can also visit Rashtrapati Tapovan, a 19-acre forest trail located on Rajpur Road. This serene environment offers a peaceful escape into nature, characterized by a rich canopy of native trees and winding trails. Visitors can enjoy wooden bridges, elevated machans for birdwatching, and quiet spots ideal for reflection and meditation. The development of Tapovan focuses on connecting visitors with nature through guided trails, seasonal flora, and eco-interpretive elements, making it a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts.
Upcoming Rashtrapati Udyan: A Vision for Recreation
Scheduled to open next year, the Rashtrapati Udyan will be a dynamic environmental and recreational space. Spanning 132 acres, it will feature thematic gardens, a butterfly garden, a scenic lake, and an aviary. A dedicated children’s play area will also be part of the park, ensuring family-friendly engagement. The park’s design includes a sports zone, walking and jogging tracks, cycling paths, and water conservation systems. These elements aim to create a living classroom that promotes environmental awareness and encourages active lifestyles among visitors, all while harmonizing with nature.
