Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has officially granted “Miniratna” status Category-I to three Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs): Munitions India Limited (MIL), Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), and India Optel Limited (IOL). This recognition comes as a result of their impressive transformation into profit-making entities within just three years. The Raksha Mantri commended the management of these companies for their efforts in enhancing turnover, promoting indigenisation, and meeting performance benchmarks necessary for this prestigious status.
Significant Growth of Munitions India Limited
Munitions India Limited has marked a remarkable journey since its inception, showcasing substantial growth in sales. The company’s revenue surged from โน2,571.6 crore in the second half of 2021-22 to a provisional โน8,282 crore in the fiscal year 2024-25. This impressive increase reflects MIL’s commitment to expanding its market presence. On the export front, MIL also demonstrated significant progress, with sales climbing from โน22.55 crore in FY 2021-22 to a provisional โน3,081 crore in FY 2024-25. The company specializes in producing a wide range of ammunition, including small, medium, and high-caliber rounds, mortars, rockets, and hand grenades. Additionally, MIL has developed in-house capabilities for manufacturing initiatory compositions, propellants, and high explosives, further solidifying its position in the defense sector.
Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited’s Achievements
Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited has also experienced notable growth, with sales rising from โน2,569.26 crore in 2021-22 to a provisional โน4,986 crore in FY 2024-25. The company has achieved a significant milestone by fully indigenizing engines for its three primary platforms: T-72, T-90, and BMP-II. AVNL’s product portfolio includes various armored and combat vehicles, such as the T-90 and MBT Arjun, as well as infantry combat vehicles like the BMP-II Sarath. The company also provides support vehicles and defense mobility solutions, including the Stallion and LPTA. This growth trajectory underscores AVNL’s commitment to enhancing India’s defense capabilities through indigenous production.
India Optel Limited’s Progress
India Optel Limited has made impressive strides over the past three years, with sales increasing from โน562.12 crore in 2021-22 to a provisional โน1,541.38 crore in FY 2024-25. The company focuses on opto-electronic systems and vision equipment, which are integral to various land systems and weaponry, including battle tanks like the T-90 and T-72, as well as artillery and naval guns. This growth not only highlights IOL’s expanding market presence but also its vital role in supporting India’s defense infrastructure through advanced technology and innovation.
Empowering Future Growth
The recent award of Miniratna status to MIL, AVNL, and IOL is expected to further empower these companies, enabling them to pursue accelerated growth and enhance their contributions to defense production and exports. This recognition is part of a broader initiative to enhance functional autonomy and efficiency within the defense sector. The transformation of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board into seven DPSUs, including these three entities, aims to unleash new growth potential and foster innovation in India’s defense manufacturing landscape. As these companies continue to evolve, they are poised to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s defense capabilities and achieving self-reliance in defense production.
