R Ashwin and Team Exonerated Amid Controversy

Former Indian cricket star R. Ashwin has been exonerated from ball-tampering accusations during the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). The allegations arose when the Dindigul Dragons, led by Ashwin, were accused of altering the ball’s condition in their match against the Siechem Madurai Panthers. Despite these claims, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) found no evidence to support the allegations, allowing Ashwin and his team to continue their campaign unimpeded.

## Match Summary: Dindigul Dragons vs. Siechem Madurai Panthers

In the much-anticipated clash between the Dindigul Dragons and Siechem Madurai Panthers, the Dragons emerged victorious by nine wickets. The match was held at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground on June 14. Batting first, the Panthers set a target of 151 runs, finishing their innings at 150 for 8. Ashwin, despite not taking any wickets during the match, bowled economically, conceding only 27 runs in his four overs. His contribution with the bat was significant; he scored 49 runs off just 29 balls, which played a crucial role in the Dragons’ swift chase, completing it in just 12.3 overs.

## Allegations of Ball Tampering

The controversy began following the match, when the Madurai franchise accused the Dindigul Dragons of tampering with the ball. In a formal complaint, Madurai’s COO, S. Mahesh, stated that the Dragons used chemically treated towels, which they claimed were employed to alter the ball’s condition. According to Mahesh, the condition of the ball deteriorated quickly during the innings, which negatively affected the performance of their batsmen. The allegations intensified when Madurai coach Shijit Chandran noted that the sound of the bat hitting the ball was unusually harsh, suggesting that the ball had been altered.

## TNCA’s Response to the Allegations

In response to the accusations, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association conducted an investigation and found no evidence of wrongdoing. TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan emphasized that the towels in question were issued by the TNCA and were available to both teams. He stated that match officials, including umpires and the match referee, maintained strict oversight of the ball throughout the game. No issues were raised during play, and the TNCA deemed the accusations to be speculative. The association requested that the Madurai franchise provide concrete evidence to support their claims.

As the TNPL continues, the focus remains on the ongoing matches and performances of the players, with Ashwin and the Dindigul Dragons looking to build on their recent victory amidst the swirling controversy.
