Qualcomm Unveils Ambitious 6G Plans Ahead of MWC 2025

Qualcomm has announced its strategic roadmap for the development of 6G wireless technology, with key innovations set to be highlighted at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona. The company plans to initiate the standardization of 6G cellular technology this year, focusing on enhancing spectral efficiency and coverage across various frequency bands. A significant aspect of Qualcomm’s vision involves the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the network and devices.

Qualcomm’s 6G Vision at MWC 2025

At MWC 2025, Qualcomm aims to showcase its 6G Vision, which features a native AI system designed to allow future networks to dynamically adjust their parameters based on real-time conditions. This includes factors such as interference levels, traffic loads, and user mobility. The company is prioritizing improvements in two essential wireless network capabilities: coverage and capacity. By utilizing AI-native protocols, these networks can learn and adapt over time, potentially optimizing performance tailored to individual applications and devices.

To effectively implement its 6G Vision, Qualcomm is focusing on the collaboration between networks and devices powered by AI. The company has already begun designing a two-sided AI-enhanced channel state feedback (CSF) system within 5G Advanced, a recently introduced networking technology. This system is expected to bring AI and machine learning enhancements across the radio access network (RAN), core, and network management layers. Notably, 5G Advanced is a crucial step toward the standardization of 6G technology, having debuted with the 3GPP Release 18 last year.

Advancements in MIMO Systems and Spectrum Utilization

Qualcomm is also upgrading its Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system designs to accommodate new spectrum in the upper “FR3” midband, which spans frequencies from 7-15 GHz. This spectrum was proposed by the World Radio Conference in 2023 and is expected to provide approximately 400 MHz of new wide-area bandwidth. Extensive simulations and over-the-air testing of the new FR3 Giga-MIMO system have reportedly resulted in significant throughput gains and coverage comparable to sub-7 GHz frequencies. Qualcomm is committed to collaborating with spectrum regulators to prepare this band for the deployment of the 6G network.

Collaborations with Industry Leaders

In its pursuit of advancing 6G technology, Qualcomm is partnering with industry leaders such as Nokia Bell Labs and Rohde & Schwarz. These collaborations aim to demonstrate the benefits and scalability of the new AI-enhanced air interface design. By working together, these companies hope to pave the way for a more efficient and robust wireless communication landscape, setting the stage for the future of connectivity.
