Punjab to Boost Tomato Production and Paste Manufacturing
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (GOI), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Punjab Agro Industries Corporation, and Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) are collaborating to boost tomato production and paste manufacturing in Punjab. This initiative aims to empower local farmers and enhance the quality of tomatoes grown in the region. During a recent visit to the HUL plant in Rajpura, Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries, S. Ravneet Singh Bittu, highlighted the importance of this partnership. He stressed the need for collective efforts among stakeholders to help Punjab farmers grow tomatoes that meet international standards.
The Current State of Tomato Production in Punjab
Punjab has a rich agricultural heritage, yet it currently contributes only a small fraction of the tomato paste required by HUL. The Rajpura plant needs approximately 11,423 metric tonnes of tomato paste annually for its ketchup production. However, only 50 metric tonnes are sourced from Punjab. This discrepancy highlights the untapped potential of local farmers. Minister Singh pointed out that companies are sourcing tomato paste from various regions across India, with Punjab providing a mere 2% of the total requirement.
He emphasized that if farmers are assured fair prices, they would be more inclined to cultivate tomatoes. Singh noted that Punjab already produces tomatoes with superior color quality, which is a significant advantage. The collaboration with PAU aims to develop hybrid tomato seeds that meet international standards, enabling local farmers to increase their production capacity. This initiative could transform Punjab into a leading tomato-producing state, benefiting both farmers and the local economy.
The Role of Hindustan Unilever in Local Procurement
During his visit, Minister Singh urged HUL management to enhance local procurement of tomatoes. He emphasized that increasing local sourcing would directly benefit Punjab farmers and strengthen the agricultural economy. The Union Minister assured that the Government of India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s leadership, would provide all necessary support to farmers in Punjab.
Singh posed a critical question: “If Maharashtra can produce tomato paste in such large volumes, why can’t Punjab?” This inquiry underscores the need for strategic planning and investment in local agriculture. By fostering a robust supply chain, HUL can help create a sustainable market for Punjab’s tomato farmers. The collaboration between the government and private sector is essential to empower farmers and ensure they receive fair compensation for their produce.
