Promoting Organic Farming in India

In a significant move to boost organic farming in India, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, chaired a review meeting of the National Cooperative Organic Limited (NCOL) in New Delhi. The meeting, attended by key officials from the Ministry of Cooperation and other prominent figures, focused on strategies to enhance the organic farming sector. The discussions highlighted the importance of linking Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) to the organic mission and promoting organic products across the country.

Emphasizing the Importance of Organic Products

During the meeting, Amit Shah stressed the need for all PACS in India to connect with the organic mission. He proposed launching a nationwide campaign to promote organic products. The Minister underscored the importance of identifying reliable sources for organic products and ensuring their purity. He urged NCOL to establish a robust supply chain that connects farmers directly to consumers under the “Bharat Organics” brand. This initiative aims to guarantee that every batch of “Bharat Organics” products undergoes mandatory testing, ensuring that customers receive pure and authentic organic goods.

Shah also pointed out that the success of this initiative hinges on the active participation of farmers. He encouraged farmers associated with Amul dairies and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to adopt organic farming practices. By doing so, farmers can contribute to a sustainable agricultural ecosystem while also benefiting from the growing demand for organic products.

Fair Pricing for Farmers

Amit Shah emphasized the need for farmers to receive fair and attractive prices for their organic produce. He believes that competitive pricing will motivate farmers to transition to organic farming. To facilitate this, he instructed NCOL and the Ministry of Cooperation to engage with Amul to discuss pricing strategies for organic flour and Arhar dal. The goal is to ensure that farmers are adequately compensated for their efforts, thereby encouraging more farmers to adopt organic practices.

The Minister’s vision is clear: once farmers start receiving higher prices for their organic products, they will be more inclined to switch from conventional to organic farming. This shift not only benefits the farmers but also contributes to the overall health of the environment and the economy.

Raising Awareness and Demand for Organic Products

Amit Shah believes that effective marketing and increased awareness about organic products will lead to a surge in demand. He urged stakeholders to promote organic products during upcoming festivals, capitalizing on the festive spirit to encourage consumers to choose organic options. By raising awareness, the government hopes to create a culture of health-conscious consumption among the public.

Shah’s vision extends beyond just marketing; he envisions PACS becoming hubs for organic agricultural products. He proposed that these societies should serve as centers for selling organic products and seeds. This initiative aims to strengthen national cooperative institutions like NCOL, NCEL, and BBSSL. Furthermore, he suggested that each of the two lakh cooperative societies should include at least one young farmer who can inspire and motivate others in their community.

Training and Financial Support for Farmers

To ensure the success of these initiatives, Amit Shah emphasized the importance of training for PACS members and farmers. Proper training will equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the organic farming sector. Additionally, he called for NABARD to collaborate with the Ministry of Cooperation to develop a new mechanism for PACS. This mechanism would facilitate loans tailored to each farmer’s capacity, ensuring that financial support is accessible to all.

By implementing these strategies, the government aims to create a sustainable and thriving organic farming ecosystem in India. The focus on training, fair pricing, and robust marketing strategies will not only benefit farmers but also contribute to the overall health of the nation.
