The Maha Kumbh, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, is set to take place in Prayagraj in 2025. Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, Shri V. Somanna, recently visited the city to inspect the preparations for this monumental event. His two-day visit included a thorough review of the Mela Camps established at the Sangam area, where millions of pilgrims are expected to gather. Accompanied by the Divisional Railway Manager of Prayagraj, Shri Himanshu Badoni, and other officials, the Minister aimed to ensure that all necessary arrangements are in place for the convenience of the pilgrims.
Minister’s Inspection of Mela Camps
During his visit, Minister Somanna inspected the Mela Camp set up in the Sangam area. This camp is crucial for facilitating the influx of pilgrims during the Maha Kumbh. The Minister took the time to interact with passengers, asking about their experiences and well-being. He also sought feedback from staff at ticket counters and inquiry centers regarding the available facilities. The staff received praise for their dedication and hard work in assisting pilgrims.
The Minister’s engagement with the passengers revealed a positive sentiment towards the railway arrangements. Many expressed their appreciation for the services provided, highlighting the importance of efficient transportation during such a significant event. This interaction not only allowed the Minister to gather valuable insights but also reassured the pilgrims that their comfort and safety are top priorities.
Extensive Railway Preparations
In a media briefing at the Mela Camp, Minister Somanna outlined the extensive preparations made by the railways over the past three years. He announced that during Maha Kumbh 2025, the railways will operate more than 13,000 trains. This includes over 3,100 special trains and 10,000 regular trains. The Minister emphasized the historical significance of the Maha Kumbh for both the country and the railways.
He commended the dedication of railway officials and staff, who are working tirelessly to ensure smooth operations. The Minister also acknowledged the support of the Uttar Pradesh government and the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in organizing this grand event. The preparations reflect a commitment to providing seamless travel experiences for the millions of devotees expected to attend.
Record-Breaking Participation Expected
The Maha Kumbh 2025 is already breaking records in terms of participation. The event commenced on January 13 with the holy bath on Paush Purnima, attracting over 3.5 crore pilgrims on Makar Sankranti alone. So far, more than 9 crore devotees have participated in the sacred baths. The Mela Authority anticipates that the largest holy bath, scheduled for Mauni Amavasya, will see over 10 crore pilgrims.
To accommodate this massive influx, Indian Railways is implementing comprehensive travel arrangements. This includes color-coded tickets and additional shelter areas to facilitate smooth boarding and deboarding processes. On Mauni Amavasya, over 150 Mela Special Trains will operate, setting a new record for Indian Railways. This is a significant increase from the 85 special trains operated during the previous Kumbh in 2019.
The preparations for Maha Kumbh 2025 reflect a collaborative effort to ensure that this sacred event is both memorable and accessible for all participants.
